i live on the top floor (21st) with a dodgey lift, it would slam the emergency brakes on 50% of the time you were in it.. I was just thinking, I know its a safety feature but I am sure it was never supposed to be used this many times so how long until the safety feature fails and snaps the cable

This reminds me of when my friend and I took a lift that said it fits 16, two policemen followed us in and as the second one got in the lift visibly and physically dropped an inch and then refused to move until he got out. He was tall and in a stab vest but didn't look like 14 people's weight

For my old job I used to have to go to this ramshackle warehouse to store stuff and a guy had to literally go all the way to the top of the elevator and switch the two wires around so it'd go the other direction... You could also see through the floor and see water at the bottom of the shaft.

I’ve had some really wonky work elevators, but my favorite was the one that would routinely shudder and make a screeching metal-on-metal noise between floors and everyone just tuned it out. We’d be surprised when it terrified visitors.

Not going to seek out a video clip, but THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE has a running gag about an elevator in the building that doesn't run unless you all tap dance. Even if the villain is holding a gun on you, all of you have to tap dance. And don't tell me I'm remembering it wrong unless it was better.

I had the same (sans sign) in an apartment building in Bucharest. Most likely the weight sensor didn't register my (at the time) small weight (around 60kg), so jumping a bit or even flexing my knees to increase the load on floor while keeping the button pressed, would determine it to start.
