reactionaries sell “housewife” as an aspirational lifestyle choice, but the people selling it, from TikTokers to senators, are by definition not housewives. that’s because what they’re really endorsing isn’t being a housewife per se, it’s the subjugation of women within the household
But does Katie Brit herself believe that she should come second to her husband within the household? Like if he wanted her to stop being a senator she would?
I used to think I knew what a housewife was until the one-two punch of Desperate Housewives and the Real Housewives taught me that ousewives have jobs outside the home and sometimes don’t even have husbands? I guess now it just means woman?
I mean, they could be selling "Kingwood Housewife" lifestyle, which is akin to a rich dude's trophy wife: living a very easy but very limited life.
However, that's not what actual "housewife" lifestyles will be for the majority of people.
Wild then for her to spend so much time fearmongering about violent immigrants, when statistically she and people like her are much more likely to experience violence from their spouses
I wouldn’t even use that definition. It’s pejorative and it’s exactly the reaction the right is hoping for. Then they get to point to you and say “see! They hate you! We’re your only hope!”
Why not instead ask those who identify as Trad Wife lifestylers - what’s stopping you? Society? Who cares!
Been saying for a while that online tradwife women are small businesses, web producers and entrepreneurs. They clearly don’t live the imaginary they push. Only suckers can’t admit it’s about marketing and not deeply held spiritual convictions.
It's nothing new. Phyllis Schlafly was doing this half a century ago, telling women to stay home and raise kids while she jetted around the world and paid other people to raise her children.
I think you say that very well. The problem is that many families today need the incomes of both husband & wife to exist. This tends to undercut the "family value" and female subjugation themes the conservatives push. BTW many of the policies that cause the need for 2 incomes are conservative.
Trad tiktok culture is half make-believe fetish from the jump
Senator giving speech from kitchen feels different though. You could imagine a feminist Senator doing it to demonstrate that power isn't unfeminine. So I'm not sure what to make of it, obviously she wasn't making a critique like that.
100%
Which is why these psychos will be like "Embryos are literal breathing children and should have more rights than those who birth them"
But also like "Nah, dudes her king off is fine"
Republicans are a hate and control cult
Again, consistency is no longer an issue in this demographic. Behavior does not need to correlate to the message. Simply repeat what is said and ignore contradictions, they are woke lies created by DEI.
a lot of these men who want a “housewife” also want that housewife to be making money (or even be THE breadwinner of the household) so this tracks. it’s about leeching everything a woman has away from her: her bodily autonomy, her finances, her passions outside of domestic duties, everything.
Good discussion of this toward end of this pod (recorded over a week before Sen. Britt thing), w Dr. Manon Garcia, author of “The Joy of Consent: A Philosophy of Good Sex”, where she says it’s expressly a political project. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w...
I’ve always seen it as less them selling an actual lifestyle and more as trying to turn it into an identity category, because that way there’s no need to resolve the conflict between the material conditions of “real” and “ideological” housewives
What they're endorsing is their lucrative, performative, pretense. If they could be money-making influencers by showing the actual lives of working women, they'd pretend to be that, too.
Housewife was renamed. Homemaker now. Homemaker's jobS: cook, cleaning, laundry, budget planner, acquisitor, nurse, nanny, animal caretaker, vet tech, gardener, tax lady, chauffeur, baker, +++. Some are pretty good plumbers, electricians, carpenters. Let's not forget the sex services. No paycheck.
Becoming a housewife influencer on the Net is a great pathway to getting out of being an actual housewife.
I know a homeschooling fanatic who did something like this ending up with her husband as homemaker. But he's definitely 'in charge' just ask him. 🙄
to the extent that they are truly encouraging anyone to be a housewife, it’s poor and middle class women. those are the women who are asked to trade away their autonomy. for the rich, it’s mostly aesthetic.
Phyllis Schlafly seeped so tradwife influencers and politicians could ooze; it’s become a whole lane & it’s a mix of wealthy hobbyists telling middle class & poor folks how to live on false pretenses & passing laws that aggressively restrict women’s liberties (over their bodies, to pay equity, etc.)
