I didn’t watch the debate, and most of the professional commentary I’ve seen on it has both not provided me with any new information about the race and inspired contempt for the commentators. I don’t know if I’m a typical American in this regard, but that’s where I’m at.
The fact that we're going to get at least twice as much mention of Biden having a raspy voice than we are of all the substantive batshit stuff Trump said is such a failure of our media ecosystem. People can figure out that someone has a cold and is old without the professional commentators.
They’ve been able to pump him with the good shit when it’s mattered before. Didn’t work this time.
Probably won’t matter for purposes of election except to extent it portends further decline, but it’s infuriating nonetheless that this is what we’re stuck with.
Unless one of them died on stage, there's little that was going to change most peoples minds.
Although people would probably write-in Trump even if he was dead.
I don’t watch debates. I try to avoid reading commentary except from a select group of people from outside the US. Too many people bring too much baggage to how they view it. I mean Trump is nuts and Biden is old. Those are true, but too many people focus on one and ignore the other.
It's mostly an exercise noting how badly the media is failing us/serving the oligarchs that pay them, yes. I think most people who have half been paying attention for the last few years already know who they're voting for.
Same. My thinking right now is: Yes, rough night for Biden. We don't yet know why. The mainstream press always catastrophizes any setback on Biden's part. (Few pointing out the insanity of the other candidate being a felon.) Those Dems currently panicking need to chill out and get some perspective.
I don’t believe that Biden necessarily lost. The problem here is
1. This debate isn’t actually changing anyone mind.
2. Biden when I was watching really struggled physically and mentally to get his point across. When he did I agreed with him but it was hard to hear him a lot.
3. Trump just did
The debate was bad, the commentary worse. The moderators did ok and I think they were helped a lot by the mike cutoff thing. They TRIED to give Trump a chance to actually answer questions by following up, but he just regurgitated his stump speech, lies and obsessed about the border.
As someone rooting, hoping, pleading, for Biden to do well, never pushing for him to drop out previously (though, admittedly I'd have preferred it), this debate was a nightmare.
I wish we could assume the average voter would read a transcript. But they won't and his age is all that played.
it doesnt matter. women are being attacked. our rights are being taken away. biden could be on life support and women will still vote for him. even maga women have problem pregnancies. women vote at higher rates than men. why is this not obvious to everyone
I watched for half a minute.
It was clear they prepped Joe all wrong. DON’T ENGAGE WITH trump. IGNORE HIM. Talk about your accomplishments and the future. If you want to engage trump ask him a random question about mushrooms.
Biden made coherent points but really struggled in speaking coherently and forcefully. He seemed feeble and tired but I think he had a cold still it was VERY painful to watch especially since Trump was such an evil lying monster
It's surreal watching a bunch of journalists say that one candidate should drop out after any stumble. Which creates its own, additional entirely manufactured stumble.
A lot of the NYT crowd are proud non-voters too, so why are they even sharing any opinions of that nature.
You really should have watched. As soon as I started watching the commentators all they did was confirm exactly what I felt watching this debate.
Dems are in a position where we need to pull a rabbit out of a hat.
The clips I've seen, when Biden stumbles, he usually eventually gets to the end of his thought. Tonight was a disaster. The MSNBC headline reads "Biden just gave one of the worst debate performances in recent memory". Maybe you're right, and it's early enough/nobody cares, but it's far from good.
I could not wait to change it from CNN to not hear what they had to say. Something along the lines "yes, Trump lied his ass off but it was a great strategy" and this totally changes things for those (~50) voters who both have no idea how to choose between these 2 and also give a shit about a debate
I think you owe it to yourself to watch a replay of the debate & ask yourself if Joe Biden is fit for office. I definitely think you should watch clips of Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom on the surrogate circuit and see for yourself their inability to mount a coherent defense of Biden's performance.
