there are a bunch of unwritten social norms about bsky/etc. interactions, and everyone's on edge because a non-trivial number of accounts are actively acting in bad faith. it's really hard. :-(

so over the weekend, on the Other Site, I posted something totally inane and included a gif, because why not.
Today(!), I noticed that instead of the gif I thought I had included on that tweet, I had instead clicked something TOTALLY RANDOM AND WEIRD omgggg. sigh.

That's a fantastic point -- seeing people talk (positively, or at least constructively) about science is really missing from bsky. I also deeply miss the days of live-tweeting conferences, it was a great way to learn more about what everyone's up to!

I think some combination of fewer people on bsky, lots of people being deeply burned out on social media, and maybe bsky (or at least the people I follow here) skewing older than the voices I followed during Twitter's heyday?

"The new report provides an evidence-based critique of a recent independent review in the U.K., known as the βCass Review,β that has become central to U.S. litigation." This article is important in itself, but also as a reminder that "postcolonial" US law remains entangled in English legal thinking.

This is a wild amount of money that we are talking about.
The average post doc salary in the UK is circa Β£40k. The NHS surcharge of c. Β£1k per year, up front, makes me understand why folks have been struggle to recruit in the UK.

The guy and I did the phone-equivalent of staring blankly at each other, then I gave up and wrote a cranky email to the company, including proof that I was the one paying the bills during the time that they overcharged me. But I'm baffled???

Electricity company (EC) letter: Hello, we overcharged you. Call this number to get a refund.
Me: Hello! I would like my refund.
EC: Oh, that refund's not for you.
Me: Oh?
EC: It's for the occupier.
Me: I am the occupier.
EC: No, the occupier is the person responsible for the bills.
Me: I am???

Once when checking in for a flight in Memphis, TN, I got the standard "where's your final destination" question, and when I answered "Windhoek, Namibia", we proceeded to have a truly surreal conversation where the airline employee tried to insist Namibia isn't a place -- did I perhaps mean Libya?
