Do you have a favorite under-celebrated song? A personal fave that is not widely appreciated? I have a bunch, but I think Hirth Martinez’s “Altogether Alone” tops the list. It’s a beautifully crafted, weird, funny song. What’s on your list?

Life’s tough for a whole lot of people & I try to temper my optimism for the future with the realities many of us face. Yet I still want to say that forming community that uplifts no matter how small does move the needle forward. Joy IS an act of rebellion and is fuel that helps us face adversity.

Why do things look darker when they're wet? I talked to a (very patient) optics expert, so that now I can explain it to you!

From sweat stains to wet footprints by the swimming pool, this is relevant summer science! Please check it out and pass it on. 🧪

So...how does that work? I can see how the virus would be able to "unlock" a cell and insert stuff, but how does the virus carry the payload of CRISPR and Cas proteins? Or is the CRISPR encoded into the virus, as well as RNA to produce the relevant Cas proteins?

There are like a million explanations of how CRISPR works, but none explain this step. And I'm curious! (2/2)

Hi folks -- I have a science question. 🧪 I know what CRISPR is, what Cas proteins are, and what template DNA is. But how is all of this stuff introduced into a target organism? Is it injected into cells? Into the bloodstream and then absorbed into cells? (1/2)

I wrote a piece on why things look darker when they're wet. It's an accessible explanation of physics/optics/technical stuff that lots of people wouldn't read, except I put it in the context of sweaty shirts and swimming pools. And Dan Goldin (who I don't know) ❤️'d it. Which is pretty cool.

The NYT, the most influential paper in the country, just ran an Op Ed called 'Why I Don't Vote' by a guy who votes. It's that simple. The NYT is a farce. You cannot trust anything they print.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

The New York Times ratfucking operation in favor of Trump is so incredibly blatant that it’s beyond parody. If you saw ratfucking like this coming from a newspaper in a movie, you’d probably think it was a bit over the top.

I don’t want to generalize too much but the place I see the most hope right now is from those that have been fighting the hardest for the longest time. Extended doomerism can be a luxury not afforded to those who have the most to lose.

I will take zero pleasure in an unleashed Trump regime ushering in a well-nigh inevitable terror campaign against US reporters, especially because they most likely will go after the remaining genuinely good ones first. (But they won’t stop there).

James Carville once said "It's the economy, stupid." It's not. The GOP platform makes clear that many folks will vote against their own economic self interest. They are more than willing to suffer, as long as folks they hate will suffer more. Blinded by spite. It's heartbreaking.

I like lifting weights because for an hour or two my brain is entirely focused on what my body is doing, and there is no room for worry or stress. It’s such a relief. And it’s easier to help people when you’re strong. That’s nice too.

Keeping Trump out of the White House isn’t the only thing that needs doing and it isn’t enough to solve all problems facing the country & world but if it isn’t done then all those problems get exponentially worse in ways I don’t even know how to express and it scares me when people pretend otherwise

In 2016, Hillary Clinton gave a speech in Wisconsin about the importance of the Supreme Court.

She warned that 2016 was "make or break" for the court—and the country.

National media—focused on her emails and Trump's antics—barely covered the speech.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?
