Totally missed this but a few friends posted photos from Chapel Hill/Durham NC--apparently here you actually needed a camera long exposure to see it. Pretty remarkable photos from other places

You can see it much further South by looking through a camera, your phone camera will work just fine most likely. Can see it from here in Georgia that way.

There's actually a NOAA/NWS Special Weather Statement! lol I don't know if we got that for the X10-X17+ flares during the 2003-2005 maximum. I certainly don't remember such. Probably has to do with the combined *monster* CMEs more than the intensity of flares.

my dumb ass was halfway down the stairs before I realized that even if it wasn't cloudy and raining, I live like 2 miles from Manhattan now and so all I'd see is skyglow. part of my brain is still in Iowa.
