An outdoor outlet in our Kentucky house had this going on; I reached in to plug something in, and felt a sharp shock. Reached in again and same thing; I thought oh no it's an electrical problem!! Then I squatted to look at it closely, and realized I was being repeatedly stung by wasps

A lot of the aesthetics of The Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum is a convergence of a few things, specifically the milieu that produced the Columbian World Exposition of 1893 and innovations in the use of colored lights on window displays in shops. Baum was a window-dresser before he was an author.

There’s obviously a stylistic connection between manga & ukiyo-e art, but it’s much more direct than that. Ukiyo-e art was falling out of fashion in Japan JUST when the magazine industry was kicking off, and they LITERALLY hired ukiyo-e artists to draw the first cartoons for these magazines.

Mary, Mother of Jesus is often portrayed in blue garments - with the colour associated with purity. However it dates back to Renaissance painters using blue pigment made from Lapis Lazuli - then more expensive than gold - to indicate her high status. Renaissance viewers would have understood this.
