A homeless shelter wrote an amicus brief in the Grant’s Pass case.
They argued SCOTUS should let the city arrest the homeless because, and I am not shitting you, the ban on doing so meant less people were willing to abide by their “two church services a day and no sex” requirement to sleep inside.
I can't put into words the mix of rage and disgust I have for this trio of decisions today. Overturning long held precedent on judicial power, giving the green light to cruelty towards the homeless, nitpicking J6 convictions...
I am going to pet the cat, who is blissfully unaware of SCOTUS 😾
Sounds like Southern Oregon, alright. My dad experienced so much anti-asian racism there when we were driving through during our family road trips back in the 80's. We lived in the Portland area, but it's always shocking to see how ultra-conservative it gets once you leave the metro area
The Grant’s Pass Rescue Mission: “Pardon me, as the only shelter in this town we have a vested interest in allowing the government to threaten these people with arrest if they don’t want to join our church.”
2 services a fucking day?
when do they think these people will be able to work? because i guarantee they want these people working, too.
never even mind that a lot of people who sleep rough HAVE jobs.....
Is there some version of the Bible these people have that the rest of us aren’t allowed to see? “Jesus welcomed the money lenders into the temple and helped them set up tables. Then he confiscated the loaves and fishes from the deadbeats.”
a neat trick with shelters like these is how they effectively trap people in homelessness. 2 mandatory religious services daily is 2-4 hours of your day gone, and I'm willing to bet anything they have a strict curfew. Makes it hard to seek work if half your waking hours are spoken for.
That's less a shelter and more a trap to force their religion on people. Also, Jesus would fucking hate the people leading that mission. They value controlling others more than helping and maybe confuse that control for help...which is just all the more dangerous.
Of course the place is a Rescue Mission. This shit sounds like something Dave Scholl and John Bjorling would have endorsed for ours before they "retired."
“When the police can’t fuck with them homeless people would rather be on the street than following our bullshit, the problem is clearly that the police stopped fucking with them”
A homeless shelter I had to make use of for one night wanted to charge you money if you had a phone or a laptop and not completely destitute. They were one of those super religious catholic ones.
oh yeah, the single shelter (Gospel Rescue mission) in Grant's pass
bans non-approved socialization between men and women bans service animals,
requires you to work 40 hours at the shelter while bars you from looking for work elsewhere
requires turning over all your medication to the shelter
Right, so gatekeep charity behind forced adherence to one specific religion. If they don't join the church and sacrifice their personal autonomy, they don't deserve help.
Sounds like what Jesus said, yup. Totally his deal. Screw the poor, right?
so what i'm hearing is
1) that city needs a new shelter
2) these people's shelter and church need to be seized or destroyed, their power broken, and their dishonorable and abominable ranks scattered to the wind
"Given the choice, people would rather sleep outside than stay in our shelter, therefore we shouldn't give them a choice" is both a brutal self-own and the core of conservative ideology
