I Watched: Paisan (1946) Another totally unique film, in which Italian Neorealism pioneer dramatizes six stories about the Allied Invasion of Italy in WW2 and the relationship between them and the Italians locals. Shot often in the actual rubble the year after the war ended. #Filmsky

I Watched: Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. (1992) A document of a teenage Black girl in 1990s Brooklyn that feels totally unique as a movie, not least because its director Leslie Harris has never been able to get another financed. Ranges from high comedy to high drama, as teenage life does. #Filmsky

Classic American political dialogue is premised on the idea that we share fundamental values but disagree on how best to promote them. I haven’t believed this for a while. Other than “I prefer to be alive and not dead” and “I like pudding,” I do not share values with these people.

I Watched: Lola (1961) This Jacques Demy film is certainly a more fun hang than many of its French New Wave contemporaries made by Godard or Truffaut, so light and frothy it threatens to float away. I will remember images and scenes in this movie but almost nothing that actually happened. #Filmsky

There’s a Criterion special feature where they interview Ben Gazzara about his performance in this movie and he says “A lot of people want their movies to be entertaining, but John [Cassavetes] wasn’t going to give them that.” I mean… that doesn’t seem like an unreasonable thing to want?

I Watched: The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) My rocky relationship with Cassavetes movies continues with this one, which is basically a thriller/gangster movie, but somehow that made it work even less for me. Much of it takes place in the least sexy movie strip club I’ve ever seen. #Filmsky

Respectfully, I don’t agree. Most people don’t even know this happened today. Step one is spreading the word about how dire it is so we can get the popular will to take the drastic actions necessary.

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1

I would agree with this. I have said many times to people recently that I have recently taken to always predicting the worst case scenario and I have continued to be proven correct. Even I, a very cynical Supreme Court watcher who really thought they had prepared for all bad stuff, was blindsided.

Look, our elected Ds are a disaster. But we should lean on them as much as we can. Please make this call if you're willing, even if you're out of state. If Durbin gets enough calls, he might finally do something. He might not, of course, but it'll just cost you a minute to call.

I Watched: Dolor y Gloria (2019) (Pain and Glory) I think I may be an Almodovar convert after watching this story of a director with health problems reflecting on his life and choices. Antonio Banderas received his only Oscar nomination to date for his performance as the lead. #Filmsky

I adore dinoramas. Especially when a museum puts in a big installation, a piece of prehistoric habitat that takes up an entire room, I like to stay there awhile and wish the creatures to move. This Albertosaurus group is at Canada’s Royal Tyrrell Museum.

and even if someone thinks "well I don't like/look at porn so why should it be a priority for me?" it's important to remember that when christofascists say "porn" they also mean age-appropriate comprehensive sex education, media with queer/trans people in it, and picture books about gay penguins.

I Watched: The Last Wave (1977) I feel like I get what this movie is about, in that it's about the disconnect between European and Aboriginal cultures in Australia. But I definitely cannot tell you what actually happens in it. Does the world end? Is there a murder mystery? I am unclear. #Filmsky

I Rewatched: The Bourne Identity (2002) The sequels were heavily influential (not in a good way IMO) on action directing, but the original is just a fairly serviceable thriller starring Matt Damon with a very fun Paris car chase in the middle. I haven’t seen this since it was in theaters. #Filmsky

Here are the choices they give for different systems. This whitewashes authoritarianism. The last bullet point should read something like "a system in which the president can imprison or kill you just because he wants to." Seriously, those are the real stakes.

I Watched: It (1990) This King adaptation was originally an ABC miniseries, now available as a 3-hour movie on streaming. I found the various domestic abuse situations of the children harder to watch than the scary clown, though Tim Curry does a very good job in his role as the latter. #Filmsky
