Experimenting with some autumn colors on Briggs & Little’s Country Roving. Photographing the skeins indoors does shows the range of tones in one yarn, but you need a sunbeam to really see the INTENSITY. I call this stuff “Autumn Fire” for a reason. 🧶

It’s just a rumor! The French edition has bigger illustrations anyway! And I’m sure it’s too late to get on the mailing list now! *desperately casting about for more deflections* Uh…maybe it isn’t the original text!

Great thread about the practical realities behind the publication of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein. Note: please ignore the rumor about a new illustrated edition of Frankenstein being released by Centipede Press. Don’t want you yahoo’s selling out the preorders before I get my copy!

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

The Small Town Titans cover of “You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch” is fantastic. Also like the Mourning Ritual cover of “Bad Moon Rising”. Great phrasing and emphasis on the lyrics.

I knew all this, and I don’t even live in the USA, but reading it all in a shortlist still makes me want to find every self-proclaimed American leftie who “can’t vote for Biden because (x)” this year and beat them with my shoe. The consequences of USA voter apathy NEVER stop at the US border.

Christ, yeah. One of the bad things about making older people invisible is that when young people see what they’ve gone through or are STILL going through, they have the chance to make better decisions. Not all mistakes must be endlessly repeated.

I’m interested to read your take on that subject. Personally I just found out yesterday about Bertolt Brecht, a “heroic” writer that I looked up to in my teens. For most of my adult life, I had no idea that most of his plays were written by invisible women that he manipulated and plagiarized.

this is one of my least favorite tropes and it is especially ridiculous when the heroes have just shot their way through an army of mooks to get to the villain oh, you can kill 475 henchmen but the guy who is actually responsible for ordering them around is a step too far? do you hear yourself?

Keeping Trump out of the White House isn’t the only thing that needs doing and it isn’t enough to solve all problems facing the country & world but if it isn’t done then all those problems get exponentially worse in ways I don’t even know how to express and it scares me when people pretend otherwise

My first read: If a president commits crimes unrelated to him being the most powerful person in the world, he can be prosecuted. But if explicitly uses his powers to commit crimes, he is at least presumptively, and probably absolutely immune from prosecution. I mean, holy shit.

"With fear for our democracy, I dissent," is about as bedrock and terrifying and vital a statement as you're going to get. That's a line you spraypaint on walls, that you ink into your skin. And it's chilling that it is necessary to say at all.

Interesting take. I am inclined to agree. This is art with the kind of real non-fungible value that the digital NFT’s can’t achieve. Singular, physical works of art, created by hand for the sake of specific fans, to commemorate events where artist and patron met in person. Provenance! :)

The world may be full of ugly, fearful people full of hateful bile, but I routinely get texts from a 59-year-old straight white man gushing how much he loves the new animated Superman show. Why? because the queer couples in the show make him feel like the world has gotten better. So…there’s that.

The Times keeps insisting on portraying the rise of fascism worldwide in terms of "division"--one side vs. another. No, it is an asymmetrical insurrection against all society's institutions (including journalism). Journalists choose to be blind to the reality, which only worsens it.
