absolutely this. republicans thrive on decline! republican policies bring economic decline which brings outmigration of young people and professionals, which strengthens the republican hold on government which brings even more conservative policies which brings greater decline, etc.

It certainly feels like they’re doing this to PA—a swing state is unreliable, but if they can destroy it from within they could potentially swing a whole election in their favor.

Exactly what's happened in Iowa. They genuinely seem to want to empty the state out so it's just a handful of Big Ag plantations and like three nice suburbs for the managers to live in.

I remain curious about the real end goal for them. You get so many different descriptions when you drill down with a modern republican. What good is a christian theocracy if your state is devoid of all industry?

One reason you can't move away from fascism is bc it will just spread and follow you. Another is this. Fascists want you to leave, for a closely related reason: it's the lack of local resistance that allows the spreading. And if everyone with the means leaves, those without any have fewer allies.

Honestly I think this is too cynical. Wealthy people are more likely to vote Republican, so it's easier to argue why Republicans want people to be rich. Those states vote Democratic for other demographic reasons. Plus creating a popular program is a great way for a state politician to get votes

Also (an Australian here), American govts run down public services, leading to people thinking that government-run services are by definition crap and inefficient, leading to more cuts to public services. It's a self-fulfilling belief that "small govt" Republicans capitalise on.

It's what Republicans did in WV, which caused it to do a complete 180 politically. They pinned the collapse of the coal industry on Obama(and not the gas boom), instead of cultivating new industry. and that was it. Reddest state in the country with the absolute worst quality of life
