What is a good resource for people just waking up to the prevalence of extremist/hate/supremacy language and symbolism in American culture? Anything any of you might recommend?

Just to be clear, this is Silicon Valley VC bro/Musk acolyte David Sacks coming down on the side of the Le Pen family, whose patriarch called Nazi gas chambers a "minor detail" of history and whose ex-wife alleged he nicknamed Hitler "Uncle Dolfie" while snarling "The Jews are invading France."

It’s such a tell that one candidate is allowed to be old with his brains leaking out while the other is subjected to a weeks long whisper campaign to knee cap him out of the race because of a bad debate performance. Almost like there’s no principle at work beyond attacking Democrats.

It really is making *me* feel crazy to see a bunch of other Democrat voters running around screaming about how Biden is now unelectable, on the basis of one bad debate and an incredibly obvious ratfucking campaign by America’s most craven newspaper.

The big one is to keep Trump out of office. After that is a little things- local elections, participating in city council meetings, being a visible, vocal pain in the ass opposition to the freaks in the GOP. We're fighting a hydra. There's no one easy trick, alas, and it will not be fixed in one day

to clarify: life under authoritarians is often boring and normal for many people until it all of a sudden isn’t, and of course it’s that uncertainty that causes the corrosion.

Correct. A prudent, law-abiding President who appoints qualified agency personnel to enact thoughtful regulations is going to see their agenda inevitably fail. A malicious, arbitrary President who runs around barking illegal commands at people will be rewarded.

Again and again, the conservative movement organizes itself around hating queer people, and because they’re loud and aggressive and violent the respectable and genteel liberal queer groups have no idea what to do, so a bigoted fringe manages to box us out of space after space.

I think this is a good microcosm of why many political journalists + pundits resent professors.
Academics are trained to make evidence-based arguments while identifying speculation and mere opinion—the main currency of much political journalism now—as immaterial.

I truly think the antidote to the rising horrors of our now is to over emphasize the value of all that is human-just go all in. We become better humans by insisting every single person has worth, should be treated with dignity, and deserves to exist. If we do that everyone else is better off too.

I strongly believe that the Trump era ushered in a truly horrific era of general ethical backsliding and nihilism in the US across all fronts, one that we still can’t even entirely wrap our brains around. (And Trump’s grotesquely evil approach to Covid made it even worse).

I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.

Radicalism becomes pragmatic in moments when institutions are tearing apart under strain. It didn't start this way, but my work in progress on Douglass is becoming a case for normies to see the stark necessity of radical action.

"...It's not about building perfect futures; it's about preventing terrible pasts. I think that is something that Europeans in the second half of the 20th century knew in their bones and Americans never did, and it's one of the big differences between the two Western cultures. ---Tony Judt
