The thing that's telling and exasperating about the centrist "Biden must drop out" calls is that... this was their guy! They act like the left insisted on him! But Biden was the guy they were saying Democrats should instead rally around when it looked like we might pick Bernie!
Had this same thought this morning. In 2020, we had a crowded Democratic primary where 20 (21 with Bloomberg?) candidates, some of whom would also have been decent nominees, duked it out, many of them raising the same concerns people have now, and Biden still CRUISED to the nomination!
Why is it weird that people thought he'd be fine but then it turned out he actually declined suddenly, as often happens to people his age, so now we have to change "our guy"? All the guys are standard bearers for the same party platform.
It would greatly aid Biden if he did a weekly YouTube video addressing the issues of the nation (like AMLO and FDR) instead of doing these idiotic debates. A simple 10-20 minute sprach.
The front page of every newspaper and news website on Friday should've been "Covicted Felon Trump Lies to America throughout debate". With a picture of Biden wrapped in the flag riding an eagle. Unfortunately, media execs don't believe in free press or democracy so they focused on Biden whispering.
admittedly they endorsed:
- klobuchar / warren (nyt duel endorsement lol)
- michael bennett (james carville)
- sanders / bloomberg, kamala ag, biden sos, warren hhs, mayo pete dhs, booker hud, romney soc, yang doe, & more! (tom friedman)
(they fell in for biden when everyone dropped out though ofc)
Exactly this. There were so many highly qualified/much younger people in the primary, but we ended up with the two oldest men being most popular. Then chose Joe to please the never-Trumpers and centrists. Of course it would be them who are now asking us to risk fascism because of their own regrets.
I wanted Elizabeth Warren, or Castro or about 5 other people before Biden. But the party picked him and especially African-Americans who are the core base of the party.
But sure, abandoning him now, and pushing Kamala Harris to the side, having to fundraise from 0 is a brilliant third way idea.
The replies here are a fascinating rehash of a Democratic primary that happened in the past. I think I'll come back and read it after I'm done with the overwhelming need to stop Trump in November. I'm sure it will be a very enlightening history conversation.
Yep, plenty of us foresaw this problem back in 2020 and they insisted it had to be Joe. Now these political geniuses want to disrupt everything 4 months before an election, geez 🙄
It’s true, but not an argument against. We’re playing poker and trying to make the best hand.
Biden prob was the best hand in 2024. Maybe Bernie would have won too, but all we know for sure is Biden did.
Now the same people who won with Biden see a different runout for 2024 and want to fold.
It's also fascinating that, since Thursday, it's by and large the right and center of the Democratic Party freaking out, while the left (and apparently the actual base) is going "shut the fuck up and get behind Biden."
It's really remarkable. This crowd went from ONLY BIDEN CAN WIN to PLEASE ANYONE BUT BIDEN in the first 15 minutes of that debate. And not because of any new information -- the pivot happened due to information their own media outlets have been whining about for months!
Dude, it never looked like we were going to pick Bernie. He had no chance whatsoever with the majority of the actual Dem base, whose concerns he dismissed as "identity politics."
Dems: Well, Biden is not viable, obviously. But it'll be alright. There's a big field and primary voters are sure to gravitate towards someone who is not Bernie Sanders.
Voters: We are scared and would like to vote for the two white men we have heard of, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
Dems: 👁️👄👁️
