Everything's complicated and my hesitation about replacing Biden up to now has been informed by polls showing other candidates not doing much better. But a lot of people seem remarkably certain that Harris specifically could not win a general election for reasons I think they should say out loud.
Besides the fact that switching the ticket around after the primaries and a month before the convention is a losing scenario.
The Republicans will give Kamala a quadruple dose of racism and misogyny, that unfortunately works quite well in American politics.
There’s a lot of sexism/misogyny and racism in the American media and electorate, so Harris would face headwinds that others don’t face. But I don’t think she’s unelectable, and I don’t think that we should simply defer to the sexism and racism by refusing to nominate a black woman. But…
Other than her crashing and burning in the primary, I think a problem is that she's strange and off-putting in one on one interactions. I disagree with her politically on stuff but if she replaced biden i wouldnt hesitate to vote for her considering the situation.
She did terribly in the dem primary in her home state, she’s brutally insincere and unlikable, she threatened parents of delinquent children with jail time, she’s a hollow suit party pick…
To be fair, the last time she was in a national election, everyone thought she would be a formidable candidate but she did terribly, and was widely considered a surprisingly poor campaigner. So there is a data point.
My main objection is that I’m sick of the “let’s replace Biden” talk coming from the Times. Biden has chosen a pretty good slate of officials, from VP Harris to Secretary Haaland, and if he keels over I have no worries about Harris.
This is my concern. There isn’t enough time for Harris and the Dem leadership to counter the onslaught of what’s to come not just from the GOP but a shittastic national press that has their finger on the scale for them.
I've always liked Harris more than Biden. I know America is super racist and super misogynist, but I's also like to believe it's gotten better enough to not spoil an election.
1. Her net approval rate is -5% (5% disapproval, 24/06/24)
2. She's a hypocrite (just one example: as AG, in CA, she sent thousands to prison for weed when she, herself has smoked weed)
3. She's incompetent: in over her head as VP
2+3 would be even more evident under the scrutiny of a POTUS bid.
Only thing about the polls is I think people's responses can't be separated from the status quo and the fact that most other folks haven't had the exposure they would have if actively campaigning.
But yeah, it would be an easy choice if someone was polling better.
for me this really comes down to: “do i think the risks to the coalition outweigh the risk of joe not getting it together?”
they both have strengths and weaknesses, as any two candidates would. i think she can win - might even be likely - but “what is the better bet?” ought to be the discussion imo
Well there’s the fact that she has only won elections in a very blue state and that her presidential campaign flamed out before the first primary. I think people focused on winning are quite understandably interested in running a couple of popular governors from swing states.
She's a cop and has no discernable ethical standards or policy positions or meaningful record from her time either as an attorney general or legislator
Harris would be the only candidate that would make sense to takeover, if such a thing were to happen. While other candidates may be similar in polls (which have been almost a joke since 2015), a 2 point difference would be enough for Trump to win and American democracy to die.
Let me say something.
At least Biden apologized to the American people about his poor showing.
That is called courage and humility.
The orange piece of shit has yet to apologize for a damned thing his whole life.
I'm sorry you have doubts.
I don't.
Out loud: I’d be happy to vote for Harris but the American electorate in general is racist and sexist as fuck and would never support her in numbers required to win.
Sucks.
Oh, I think she can win. She polls 2nd after Biden among all Democrat politicians. I’m worried that she’ll meet the same racism as Obama, plus the same sexism as Hillary, which could put her at a disadvantage, especially considering the billionaires going all-in for Donny “Felon 34” Tre45on.
The GOP will spin to their racist/misogynist base Biden staying in as Harris inevitably taking over anyway, so it increases the attack surface without letting her defend herself directly
I think a lot of people assume that this country is too racist and misogynist to allow for a Black woman president. I don't know if it's true or not, but I'm so tired of people basing their votes on their own imagination of everyone else's issues thereby fulfilling their prophecies.
Biden’s campaigning to convince people who are definitely going to vote that he is more acceptable to them than the other guy. Those people are white voters 60 and older. They’re going to vote unless they are demoralized by Trump. How does Harris win those voters? She can’t. It’s that simple.
There are good reasons to doubt Harris on her past performance and general track record. I think the race/gender factor as an electoral concern is overstated. It matters but it wouldn’t be my main concern for her. But either way, talk that she *couldn’t* win is way overstating it.
White columnists have been wishcasting Newsome, Whitmer, or Mayor Pete never once mentioning how they'll deal with overpassing Kamala or if they even consider that Black and other POC voters folk might feel upset and betrayed.
Same people ignored the "Black jobs" racism towards Blacks and Latinos.
if someone would say 'the wicked values of our countrymen make her candidacy very difficult, if not impossible,' I could at least respect their intellectual courage.
my biggest beef with her is honestly the same as the biggest with biden and any other possible candidate: the top flanks of the dem leadership and the campaign machine just is not structured towards the fundamentals of winning, which undercuts every possible choice
There's a very specific personal vulnerability there that I'm surprised hasn't come up much on the right, but my sense is that doubt here is more about, uh, demographic concerns that haven't really been fleshed out or justified explicitly. Could be wrong.
