Even by the degraded standards of today’s court, the possibility that one or more of the justices supported an effort to end the constitutional order they’ve sworn to uphold is a outrageous new low www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
I remember a time, not that long ago, that I thought the supreme court was the last bastion of sanity in our government... I don't know if it actually was or if I was just ignorant.
Serwer's article on Ailto's Stop the Steal flag, along with the NYT reporting on the matter, shows what we're facing: GOP is using the tools of democracy to dismantle democracy. Best way to halt this is to re-elect Biden. But if that fails? How do we stop a fascist takeover of our government?
Frankly, they should be above politics and that’s where the court has gone wrong. They should have no actual political opinion that they express their opinions should be on the constitution and its interpretation and nothing else.
Remember when "avoiding even the appearance of impropriety" was an ethical standard?
Yeah, that was reduced to pure optics, not actual ethics, but now they're all going mask off I guess. YOLO!
That Eastman et al. were convinced it could all work makes more sense to me now.
They were starting with at least 2 zealous advocates inside the Court for basically nullifying the vote in the fake elector states.
The Jan. 6 case oral arguments showed how close we still are to a S Ct.-blessed coup.
I would say Alito showed what he meant by "judicial restraint" they always scream about. I mean, he could just put up his Trump flag instead of flying the stars and stripes upside down.
Some high quality restraint man....
back when i was going reviewing movies professionally, it was company policy to decline any studio's free popcorn and soda offers, just to prevent even a hint of bias in the published review. been thinking about that lately. no reason.
Someone should ask SCOTUS apologist and Chief Justice John Roberts to defend reckless displays of partisanship and ethical compromise by members of the bench
Yep. Hands up if you’re surprised it was Alito, though. What, nobody? Yeah…me neither. Thomas may be the most cartoonishly clownish and craven, but it has always been Alito who’s the irredeemable, clenched-jawed revanchist ideologue. Fuck that guy.
The scary part of this discussion is that Alito is openly showing his support for insurrectionists and there’s not a dang thing that will be done. He will not recuse himself from election cases. He’s untouchable and knows it.
The whole point of January 6th was to delay certification long enough for SCOTUS to "reluctantly" send it back to the states, so I'm pretty sure that Alito and Thomas were in on it.
Does anyone think that Johnson won't come up with a way to delay certification this time around?
Thomas openly used his office to attempt to conceal his wife’s work to coordinate the insurrection.
This remains shocking, but the story broke in March of 2022.
