...or Cliffs' Notes for someone whose English skills aren't too hot. But I'd certainly direct them to human-produced summaries, simply because so many AI products seem to run entirely off the rails when asked to summarize, especially complex works.

...just because their English skills aren't there yet. If they need it for a project, the way I needed Bible verses for an art project despite not knowing a lot about the Bible or its contexts, there's human-prepared summaries in a lot of places, I'd recommend Simple English Wikipedia...

There is this idea, many people got from school, that one is supposed to read for improvement, read these Great Books and you'll be a better person, etc. And the idea that you're 'supposed to' read these works makes me picture someone thinking it a shameful thing to put down a book...
