Mississippi is the poorest state in the US.

Even though the state gets federal welfare funds, it is difficult to get welfare.

The money was all getting stolen, and they got away with it.

Now the journalists who exposed the story are facing a lawsuit and jail.

this entire crusade against diversity in hiring and admissions is based on the supposition that all white men are necessarily more qualified than any nonwhite person or woman who might be considered for the job. like, this lawsuit more or less states that outright.

Isn't it interesting that they're trying to frame themselves as initiating *that* war instead of the Civil War? Wannabe Confederates still don't like being called what they are. Probably because it reminds them they lost the first time.

Over the weekend, I found a tiny pink plastic shoe on the ground near my office. I placed it at eye level, on a wooden post, by the stairs. This morning, on that same post, was this picture.

I voted uncommitted in the primary. But Uncommitted isn't saying that Biden is just as bad as Trump, nor is it telling people not to vote for Biden in the general.

In fact, they seem carefully not saying that.

I have been yelling at Biden. I've written letters, gone to protests, etc.. But I also admit the reality that the people who will be hurt if Trump is re-elected, worse than if Biden is re-elected, genuinely matter. You don't seem to have a reasonable explanation of why they shouldn't matter to us.

I care that his appointees to the NLRB are pro union. I care that he's not trying to forcibly detransition trans kids. I care that he's been building green energy infrastructure. I'm deeply angry at Biden's Israel policy, but know for certain Trump will encourage an even worse genocide.

And by the way, Nader voters in Oregon in 2000 didn't think "we're totally safe, Gore's got Oregon in the bag." Totally the opposite - Nader voters here were thinking "Oregon's a swing state, supporting Nader here puts a lot of pressure on the Democrats to not take our votes for granted."

In 2000, it was well known that Oregon and Washington were swing states. If 2024 were like that, I'd of course vote for Biden. But because Oregon was a swing state in 2000 doesn't change the fact that it's not a swing state in 2024.

That's just one policy, but there are many more such policies - policies we don't hear much about, in which the difference between Trump and Biden makes a big material difference. And the more marginalized a person is, the more likely it is that Trump being president will make life worse.

Yes, but it can get worse. Trump defunded UNFPA; Biden restored the funding. This didn't make many headlines, but Trump reducing UNFPA's capacity means that more developing world women died in childbirth, or had to suffer untreated fistula (which is a horrible and painful condition).

Martin Mull is gone. Usually I post four movies to watch of a legend we lost, but the only one that feels right here is this one, about the life and death of a great comedic writer with a pivotal funeral scene involving Mull. It’s a criminally underseen Netflix “original” and you can find it there.

A conversation on our Discord has prompted me to say again: remember, y'all, what really sells books is not the author talking about their work, but *readers* talking about it. Word of mouth drives far more sales than advertising or any other engine. So if you loved a book, tell your friends!

I'll be doing GOTV work that will help Biden in swing states, as well as doing GOTV work to increase the odds of Democratic congressional candidates winning. (As I've done in other elections). You can call that whatever you like. But I don't think I'm failing to do my part to help Dems win.

2) That most Americans don't get a meaningful vote for President is horrible and anti-democratic. And it should be changed. Changing that is a long and difficult process, admittedly, but hiding the truth from people only makes it more difficult.

Two reasons. 1) If people in safe states understand their vote for president doesn't matter, they may be more likely to contribute in other ways, like phone banking for swing states, or donating money. But if we hide the facts from them, then they may think voting for Biden is the best way to help.

I always vote. There's much more on the ballot than just the Presidential race. Someone who will vote for Biden only if the election is close in their state, and someone who will vote for Biden regardless, are functionally identical in terms of helping Biden win. It's really that simple.

If someone in Oregon wants to meaningfully impact the presidential election, there are things we can do. We can work on GOTV efforts aimed at swing states, for example. But voting for President in a non-swing-state is symbolic, and it's a mistake to pretend otherwise.

My state is safe because there's no realistic scenario in which Oregon is won by Trump except a nationwide blowout for Trump. If there was ANY chance Oregon would be a swing state, I'd vote for Biden. If every single voter thought like me it wouldn't increase Trump's odds by even a decimal point.

Respectfully, I think you misunderstand what's happening if you think voters like me determine if Oregon is a safe state or not. If Oregon stops being a safe state, that'll be because of much larger and more consequential changes, like a shift in demographics, an economic collapse, etc..

My suggestion for expressing your displeasure? Do vote for Biden. But also, go to protests. Write letters to newspapers - as a skilled writer, you're more likely than most to see your letters published. Donate or volunteer for progressive politicians who criticize Biden. There are ways!

Yes, it may be that in some future election, Oregon will be a swing state. And if that happens, I will definitely vote for the Democrat for President. But pragmatically, it doesn't matter if I vote for Biden or not this year. Do you believe voters should behave pragmatically or not?

I feel like people saying "even if you hate Biden, vote for him because functionally not voting for Biden helps Trump win" are making a pragmatic argument. But then many of these same people, when talking about non-swing voters, suddenly switch from pragmatic to symbolic arguments.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.
