There's a world on the other side of this with a huge, vibrant, unionized and high-paying industrial base remaking the physical world for the post-fossil fuel age. It's already starting and I think even Trump can't *fully* destroy it, but he can slow it down and make us lag wayyy behind.

Thanks largely to Biden and the Democratic party there is now a kind of global race to get to the mass, chear carbon-free energy. We're going to hit peak global emissions (fingers crossed) this year or next. We're deploying solar at a level that blowing away every single prediction.

And there really is a story to tell, one I've tried with varying success to describe. We are now in the midst of the greatest civilizational transformation - the green transition - since the industrial revolution and the mass adoption of fossil fuels for energy. It's already changing so much.

Which gets to me to a huge issue that is connected to but distinct from the question of age. Elections are about the future. They're about where we're going. Trump's argument about the future is very literally a time-machine to 2019, before covid. That's the argument in a nutshell. Let's go back

I’m happy to say ratfuck as many times as it takes for people to recognize that expressing their opposition to Trump through the medium of constant attacks on Biden is just goddamned dumb.

Because I can’t overturn who the primary voters voted for and anger towards the candidate opposed to Trump in this moment doesn’t help the singular overriding goal of “stop Trump”.

Gee, I wonder how things would be different if in those five minutes, low-information voters saw Democrats highlighting the many, many, many examples of Trump's severe mental incompetence instead of demanding that Biden withdraw.

Which do you think persuades unengaged people more : a unified message of “he’s competent and has been a great president; the Times prefers Trump because he gave them more access” or the circular firing squad?

I’ll take you at face value: Why not? Do you actually think fixating on “okay but should Biden drop out for being old and dumb” while ignoring revelations like “Trump palled around with Epstein” helps beat Trump? Or is Trump less of an existential threat to you than most?

We had a moment in which we could have treated this like a rerun of but her emails ratfuckery and reject it outright, circle the wagons, and put up a defense. Instead we (and again, most damaging, elected officials) prioritized getting “honest and smart” points like this is a normal election.

This is, to be honest, my problem with anyone claiming they’re constantly repeating NYT talking points because they’re worried about Trump winning. That’s how we’d behave in any election, debating about strategy and armchair quarterbacking. It shows an abstract worry, not a visceral fear.

Am I fucking crazy, or has this been one shitty debate performance, followed by a week plus of story after story about "panic" etc? No new evidence that he's unable to do it, just constant "people are saying"?

Listen, if the Biden campaign wanted to quell concerns about his age, they would have put him out there, like in the post-debate pressroom, a rally, an event at the Stonewall monument, a national address, a medal of honor ceremony, a meeting with governors, another rally, and televised interview.

If Democrats are confused about how to handle tough questions about their nominee's fitness for office, they can just look at the thousands of examples of Republicans avoiding, deflecting, and redirecting similar questions about Trump over the past 8 years.

Wow did they literally schedule this interview for 10pm so they can be like "look! he stays up late *And* talks real good!"? Like… It'll *work* (in part if not mostly because they're gonna have surrogates out tomorrow spinning and stumping as hard as they can), but I still find it really funny.

Nothing is stopping every single Democratic elected official and apparatchik from taking the airwaves every single day to articulately and decisively repeat a set of cogent talking points about Trump (ie 45). Nothing. Dem PACs could be slamming him with ads now. Stop whining and do that.

I don't think polling on possible alternatives helps at all right now because there's not way to measure the impact that trying to switch candidates mid-race has. It's not good though and my guess would be a double-digit wipeout, regardless of who it is
