*There's* the schmuck I've disliked since 1988. I don't know what the right thing to do is, but good lord is that now what this is about. The correct answer is "defeating Donald Trump is a matter of the gravest national importance. I'm the one who has done it and I believe I'm the one...

We need more, but credit where due: both The Nation (June 2024 issue) and Boston Review have run a breakdown of the Project 2025 “Mandate for Leadership” document. Media Matters, too. Lots of good work going on digesting this.

The biggest issue with Biden coverage is that he’s now The Story, which means that most of the press is focused on The Story and not any of the context or consequences. If we were having a serious discussion about qualifications for presidency, age, and the two main candidates, I’d be fine with it.

Like, yes, ok, the media owns some of this. But also ... if you have a campaign, literally any of those are gigaquake events to change the tide and frame what you're going to do and take that message to the voters, and how exactly is it the campaign can't capitalize on it? That's the issue

This week SCOTUS killed Chevron deference, gave Trump total immunity, and Trump was credibly tied to Epstein, and it seems to me if your campaign somehow seriously can't find a way to then change the topic of conversation in the newspapers or stop your party panicking, what are we doing here exactly

I’ve been critical of Attal and his rhetoric over the last 3.5 weeks: but if the RN loses on Sunday, he should be remembered as the one in the Macronist bloc who maneuvered to avoid the president’s bonkers gamble result in a far-right government.

Explosive reporting in Le Monde confirms what was apparent all week: Macron resisted the emergence of anti-far-right front after round 1. His PM, Attal, forced it as a fait accompli, & pressured for drop outs to block RN. Even then, Macron made some phone calls to undercut it.

i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)

Also a lot of artists have dogshit estates controlling their rights posthumously, unfortunately. Obviously there's nothing legal to be done about that in most cases, but it's useful to bear in mind. (also, it's not like the dead could have reasonably predicted having to take a stance on this issue)

Because Judy Garland cannot consent to her voice being used this way, she's dead. Her estate can, but with this technology being new, and there not being clear laws about it there's a risk involved with that. Also that technology could be used to make her say awful things.

Using Judy Garland's voice to read The Wizard of Oz is a calculated choice. It's pulling on heartstrings. Who doesn't want to hear the person who starred in probably one of their favorite childhood movies read the book it was based on. It's sweet. It's wholesome. It's a lie.
