I also think some very wealthy people simply aren't that bright. They genuinely believe their own meritocratic myths and fail to understand how things like public education make them money or keep them alive. They won't connect the dots until their nurse fails to read a pill bottle properly.

Think of how quick it happens to even mildly well-to-do boomers who came up the middle class path they torched, & now get so mad about things like bike lanes, bc they’re retired homeowners long removed from urban commuting. Billionaires are like 1000000x that level of societal detachment. Terrifying

I grew up on welfare in LA. I unexpectedly went to an Ivy. I met people with no life experience and wild opinions. That was the greatest education. Since then I've seen so many well-connected white men get picked up every time they fall. Doesn't take that much wealth to be insulated from learning.

It’s seriously stunning how these oligarch wannabes can’t see what living in a country without access to good public education and lots of guns is like. There are several good examples in the world right now. Their fever dream is that they would be the princess in the story not the scullery maid.

I often think of the line in Westworld (2016) where the owner of the megacorp that built the killer robots says something like "I'm dying of a disease whose research funding for a cure I canceled 15 years ago."

There is ample evidence, in my view, that a great many wealthy people are un- or ill-educated. And by that I don't mean merely disagreeing with the left. I mean seriously, literally un- or ill-educated. But so many of them have no reason to care.

The fact that supposedly smart rich people do everything they can to accelerate environmental destruction, including crushing public infrastructure/transportation initiatives, shows they have zero clue about true sources of their wealth. Breathtakingly dumb. 😕😐

Its really easy to let that view just get narrower and narrower when you have no need to work with people or share resources. Like just being in school you have to learn about all these people you thought you wouldnt like but actually end up being okay Seems like people with money must idk

Wealth is definitely no proxy for intelligence or wisdom or moral superiority. There's probably a strong association with conceit though, which I hypothesize is a result of spared lessons from failure. I'd like to see some science.

It’s why I never repped business books. Horowitz’s book, Hard Choices (juvenile joke intended), there’s a chapter about how no one cares about your decision making until it affects their job. See, it’s hard spending other people’s money, never losing & taxed like fast food worker.
