Would you support deporting all undocumented immigrants?
Yes 62%
No 38%
6/7 YouGov/CBS poll
Morality aside, this would mean deporting ~50% of the agricultural workforce and ~3% of the total workforce. Unemployment is currently 4%.
Maybe time for some Democratic counter messaging on immigration?
How about amnesty for virtually all and a straightforward path to citizenship? Followed by a large increase in legal immigration so we can stop arguing about this?
Oh, I’m hearing racism…
This is just one of the reasons why it's so important for conservatives to destroy DEI initiatives and SEL programs in schools. People can't be tricked into supporting bigoted policies if they understand racism and have empathy. I hate it here
Current Democratic leadership messaging on immigration is to do what Trump did regarding amnesty, try and close the border and in general, foster this attitude. Maybe it isn't Dem messaging, but Dem actions?
Yes, the let all married undocumented get nationalized is a nice start
Anti-immigration language and views are growing again it seems, and just in time for more and more climate refugees we shall see in the coming decades, not to mention those fleeing wars, violence and poverty.
A counter narrative will be difficult, as anti-immigration rhetoric is too useful to the British press, who use it to avoid platforming green and left-wing talking points. Just look at how they eliminated discussion of Greece, TTIP, refugees, taxing billionaires etc from the Brexit referendum.
I notice that they want to deport workers but no one talks about the companies that employ undocumented workers. It’s like punishing drug users while ignoring drug dealers. That said, plenty of ag workers come on legal visas for seasonal work. Are they going to stop big ag from hiring legal workers?
It is infuriating how many undocumented immigrants kept this country going during the pandemic, often at great personal risk to themselvrs, and now people want to kick them out.
Most polls show majority support for a path to citizenship. It’s not good that mass deportation is something that sounds so normal that this many people say ok, but I’m not sure what this poll result actually tells us.
Would you support dep/all undocumented immigrants if it meant food shortages of meat and produce at your local supermarket?
Would you support dep/all undocumented immigrants if it increased unemployment for people in the building trades?
Remembering the account of a civil trial in Phoenix from a few years back in which a man was suing a roofing contractor for using undocumented immigrant labor. People just laughed at the guy for believing contractors could find all-legal work crews to do that kind of work in Phoenix.
The age tabs are a little less depressing but it’s still a bummer that even 39% of under 30’s would support it.
In any case, this is the kind of shit Brexit was built on and it has been a huge disaster. It’s self-immolation.
These people by and large have no fucking clue what an undocumented immigrant actually is, and zero understanding of how anything works. What can you do about shit like this?
What would the counter-messaging be, exactly? Family separation and mass deportation have continued relatively uninterrupted. Democratic and Republican policy have largely been the same on immigration, even if the rhetoric is lighter.
Sorry, but are you serious?
If we allowed in all of the asylum seekers fleeing the results of US intervention, then it would very likely lead to the end of our Empire!
You'll regret this once the price of corn syrup, lawn care and novelty tshirts you'll never wear again skyrocket!
