my all time hottest star trek take is that worf is unlikable. he is a deadbeat dad and a controlling boyfriend and handles a bat'leth clumsily. 0/10 bad pagh

The only likable thing about Worf is that he's got two dicks and is good at sex. He's annoyingly insecure too.

I think it's funny that the Star Trek franchise starts with a crew and especially a captain that get in a lot of physical altercations and win nearly all of them, so the reboot has a big scary strong Security Officer whose job includes handling the physical alterations, nearly all of which he loses.

I mean, that's kinda why I love him. He's such a a dour jerk that I feel like it highlights the antics of the rest of the crew. Also this

Not to pile on, but how come in every litany of what's wrong with Worf no one mentions that he was anti-Union in the Bar Association episode!

Honestly, most of the TNG crew was unlikeable when you think about it. Picard was stuffy, Riker was a serial harasser, Crusher abandoned her son for a year, Yar let herself be murdered by an oil slick, Wesley was Wesley, Geordi was obsessive about women, and O’Brien always seemed like he hated life.

Remembering the DS9 episode where Worf goes on trial for war crimes when he broke protocol and opened fire, destroying what might've been a ship full of civilians. And the cast defend him but in the end go: dude that was fucked, you seriously shouldn't have done that, what the hell is wrong with you

They're all kind of unlikable in TNG. I wouldn't invite any of them to a dinner party. (Maybe Picard, but you'd need to balance him with some livelier people.)

I liked Worf's character because he helped me explore my feelings about growing up in a culture that you didn't originate in. What makes a Klingon a Klingon? If you weren't raised Klingon, are you still? He was forever trying to figure this out and was often reacting the way he thought he "should".

He also crosses picket lines without remorse. 100% he’s a cop and he has only three good lines in the entire franchise, all of them merely stating the obvious. This is a good take.

Plus, as Dax pointed out, his whole "Klingon" vibe is bullshit. Real Klingons laugh, drink and fight. He's like one of those chuds with the Greek statues in his avatar going on about the death of the western man while ignoring the whole gay sex part of Ancient Greek culture

I had difficulty with him because the actor isn’t great at fight scenes so buying him as a badass was tough. He always looked unathletic to me. In fairness, the choreography was bad even for the era and that weapon can’t be wielded effectively in combat because of how it’s built. Deck was stacked

I think these criticisms are broadly true but are also in some ways *why* he's such a beloved character. Because he was a Klingon, he was allowed to be flawed (re: Roddenberry's rules that 24th century humans were all well adjusted) and his big emotional arc is arguably overcoming toxic masculinity.
