Writers: Challenge the agreement/contract that your publishers present you with. They'll start off saying this is our contract, take it or leave it, but it's negotiable. Every contract is. 'Boilerplate' means this is where you start, not where you finish. And learn what 'subsidiary rights' means.

really glad that at some point I fully internalized that it was fine to stop reading a book for any reason whatsoever, no matter how critically well-regarded or "good" it is. vibes are off! life's too short! too many books out there!

when outlets write about this stuff they could easily talk to any of a million experts on consolidation and merger history who'd tell them these deals NEVER deliver the promised synergies, cause endless layoffs, and largely exist to boost stock and nab tax breaks but they're not interested

Incidentally one of the things people aren't mentioning about Project 2025 is that ending no fault divorce is in there which means if you have been thinking of getting divorced you should get a move on. Before, yknow, you can't anymore.

Lifetime caps: some insurers would say that once a person had run up a (lifetime) bill of $2M or so, they were no longer insurable, kicked forever to Medicaid and Medicare. NICU nurses told me abt pre-ACA kids who would hit their lifetime cap before their first breath of fresh air.

Pre-existing conditions bans: insurers reserved right to limit a personā€™s insurability if they had certain illnesses prior to getting insured. You know what completely innocent NICU babies are? Giant clusters of pre-existing conditions. The most vulnerable, the most innocent, the most uninsurable.

Ah, FB memories serving up some winners. This is what an itemized $1,330,000 NICU hospital bill looks like (only 96 days to get there). The apple is there for scale. Hereā€™s why I share it. Too many ppl donā€™t know abt lifetime caps and pre-existing bans. Bc the STILL-VULNERABLE ACA banned them.

What this article leaves out is that if you hand your unlocked phone to a police officer, they can legally search it. Unless companies develop a method that allows you to show officers insurance cards and driver license without unlocking the rest of your phone, don't.
