Ken Klippenstein is streaming with George Galloway. The Young Turks are hosting RFK Jr. One ex bernie spokesperson is streaming with candace owens and another is defending Nick Fuentes. Brianna Wu is hanging with lauren southern. Maybe now is the time to re-evaluate how the left chooses celebrities.
That’s the thing—people love to accuse the socialist left of “purity testing” when we warn people about these assholes. And they get all upset about our bar being “too high.” And that’s how they make Russel Brand their hero and learn nothing from the experience.
Is the left really choosing celebrities, or is celebrity a thing that people build for themselves? Because I suspect the issue might be more that people who seek out celebrity often have some pretty major character flaws that have a tendency to get made worse by the attention economy.
They're a fair amount of grifters who spend their entire life learning to manipulate and take advantage. We can't know some of them are grifters until they do something that reveals their hypocrisy.
Of the roughly 500 Bernie ex-staffers in our FB group, almost all of us are just doing useful organizing work with no celebrity at all, so while your point is a good one, I don't want to let the crappiest leftists define us either
Yeah, but we'll slowly drop them. They won't go away completely, but they'll fade into background noise.
Conservatives, on the other hand, seem to be unable to ever let go, no matter what their celebs do. Unless the new flavor of the month declares them "woke" or somesuch.
I remember Destiny from when he was a slightly chaotic StarCraft II Wings of Liberty player that popularized Infestor use.
Waking up a decade and a half later and finding out he’s now a Twitch Polemic for vaguely brocalist causes is proof there’s no requirements for being a leftie thought leader.
If you think we have the right ideas, and I think we do, then there has to be some reason that after over a hundred years we haven't broken through and the best answer I have is there are fundamental flaws in how we organize ourselves that make it impossible for us to sustain a movement. We suck.
I never chose any of those people as celebrities for any of my sociopolitical causes.
Also: today I discovered the insane & toxic part of Bluesky. Got dogpiled by “left” extremists, nutcases, and/or propagandist chaos trolls. No idea which and it doesn’t really matter. It felt like bizarro twitter.
"Resolve, then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tiny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us."
Walt Kelly
I've read some of Ken's work at The Intercept. He's a recurring guest on The Majority Report, which is my main political podcast. Which means I have to fight all of you with a knife right now.
But I have zero use for TYT or Ana "birthing person" Kasparian in particular.
its not like we chose them lol the bernie movement generated a leftwing media bubble which predictably burst after the movement came to a screeching halt and unsurprisingly some of these "celebrities" are selling out because they know they cant survive in this scarcer leftwing media ecosystem
I remember one Bernie supporter saying he was voting for Tulsi Gabbard in the DNC primary. And if she didn't win, he was voting for Trump. Why was he supporting Bernie in the first place?
When your schtick is "I'm a leftist who hates Democrats and wants to destroy them," you soon find that the people who want to fund you destroying them are conservatives.
tbf this is a list of people who have seemed like sketchy shit lords basically forever.
especially the young turks. did anyone ever tolerate them? there’s not a single person I can recall in my life who’s ever said a positive thing about them.
IMO All of those people are grifters with zero actual principles
But the real issue is the far right wing billionaires & oligarchs who fund the right wing media ecosystem with infinity $ which makes these “why I abandoned the left” testimonials happen so often
More $$$ in pushing MAGAt propaganda
