Neoliberalism’s biggest downfall is also its main goal: to disconnect GDP growth from Quality of Life. Whatever the pros and (many) cons of using GDP to measure the health of an economy, the disconnect from QoL leaves the majority of the population hopeless for the future.

I started serving on my town's climate change commission 4 years ago. We're now starting to see the first small projects come to fruition, the big project may be half a decade away. You can't do that on a 2 year post doc.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

Sometimes I feel about democracy the way folks in my replies talk about climate...if they aren't working on it directly, they feel powerless/hopeless. The only reason I feel decent about climate is because I work on it w other people who care. Guessing that might work for other important stuff too.

If we really liked sharks for some reason (I'd hazard a guess of some "blah blah top predator" macho nonsense) it would make me so uncomfortable. This just keeps him neatly in the "human opposite day" category.

the fact that we can look at most major problems with our lives and guess "this is the fault of private equity" - and have that actually be correct a shockingly large percentage of the time - is an excellent reason to regulate the industry into the ground

Imagine every single thing tech bros say about AI is coming from a 9 year-old schoolboy “it’ll make the movie different every time you watch it”, ““you can just tell it what you want and it’ll write the book for you” etc, and you see the emotional and social level that they’re working on

I have no doubt that the economics will dramatically favour renewables and thus climate disaster is completely avoidable.

But economics *do not matter* if your ideology is to lock us into oil dependence. They will spend infinite amounts of our money to do so.

I have a theory that because learning empathy is coded as feminine that a lot of men deliberately don’t learn it or work hard to overcome it and develop a low level alexithymia, which they then mistake for both stoicism and rationality, rather than emotional illiteracy.

Because it generates maximum pain for minimum gain. Consumers seriously affect their lives and make compromises, in order to achieve essentially nothing. Politically, this a) Staves off more effective government action, and b) Convinces people that action is going to be a personal hardship.

The whole idea that climate change can be meaningfully address to consumers altering their personal decisions is so horribly counterproductive it's not surprising to discover it was invented, in large part, by energy companies and other pro-climate apocalypse forces.

Climate scientists are experts at modelling the past, present and future of Earth systems. If you want an accurate and complex picture of the space of potential political, social and community level action, you need to turn to broader and more representative groups.

the idea ai would become sentient and kill us all was always a ridiculous shiny object to distract from the vastly more obvious outcome that humans would simply exploit ai as a dumb tool for killing with no accountability

This incredibly important space telescope is ALREADY IN SPACE, functioning beautifully, and on track to continue delivering astonishing cosmic discoveries for another 5-10 yrs. Abandoning it in space, turning off the receivers, and discontinuing its research would be horribly wasteful. #SaveChandra

There’s always advice about women communicating more like men in the workplace - more direct, aggressive even, no time for please/thank you, don’t ask, tell. Honestly, I wish we’d take the good from the “too nice” approach and make that the de facto. Why did we decide being a dick was professional?
