great many people on here working for various legacy media operations who for no fault of their own are automatically going to have to work harder to have any credibility in the USA than their level of knowledge merits. Their employer is giving them the experience of being not white in America

Why are most US political journalists so utterly brainfucked? It's literally maddening to watch ceaseless and total coverage of Biden's supposed need to resign because old when (a) that is campaign suicide and (b) whatever shape he's in, his opponent will drag the US into serious autocratic decline.

Notice how everyone is somehow talking about Biden Too Old right now, and NOT about how the Supreme Court just legalized Trump being a dictator for life and gutted the administrative state, and how the Heritage Foundation is now issuing terrorist threats? Think that might not be an accident?

Not having a massive media apparatus eager to help push your message makes it a bit harder. But yes, Dems need fighters, not the professional triangulators they actually have.

I firmly believe it is ALWAYS worth flooding the zone with reminders of how Trump is a convicted felon pedophile rapist who pees on people. That is how the GOP plays the game. We should too.

It really is making *me* feel crazy to see a bunch of other Democrat voters running around screaming about how Biden is now unelectable, on the basis of one bad debate and an incredibly obvious ratfucking campaign by America’s most craven newspaper.

Art Sulzberger has committed the greatest sin in journalism- more people are talking about the publisher of the paper than what is in it. As the Indian newspaper legend Ramnath Goenka said "When the paper is in the news, it is bad. When the paper is the news, it is over."

Based on US experience, I would amend to: The way to defeat the right politically is to enact meaningful policies that actually improve people’s lives. And make damn sure the people know that you did it. Because the oligarch-owned media sure as hell won't tell them.

so here's a thread about why i'd rather be biden — yes, biden — right now

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

I would go further and flatten the federal bench so that every judge defaults to trial court. Rotate them through single term appellate panels with each panel (a) deciding cases selected by previous panels and (b) selecting cases for the next panel to decide. No chief justice at all.

This Originalist™ court has effectively immunized both the president and all federal law enforcement officers from any meaningful accountability. Because if there are two things the Founders cherished, it's the power of a king-like executive and armed agents of the government to act with impunity.

Fwiw the obstacle to "the President drone strikes an opponent" isn't and was never fear of prosecution after leaving office, but their ability to have clearly illegal orders carried out. This is similar to the "you don't need to pass a law to have the power to stop a coup" priniciple.
