I always wanted to say "if you're hiring me to write quicksort, something has gone horribly wrong". It is extremely rare for developers to be called upon to write novel algorithms. Farting around on leetcode for tech interviews is about the same as studying for the SATs. Same energy.

I know this quote isn't new, but today it got me thinking about the divide between Silicon Valley Tech Bros pushing AI and the rest of us - they don't do the chores. And they aren't talented artists, so they want AI to do art for them, because their mom, spouse, or maid is already doing the chores.

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

A couple years ago my spouse was ill and so, though it isn't usually my task to take the kitchen trash out to the garage trash can, I did so. I opened the lid, threw the trash bag in...and then abruptly released the lid when I realized the entire trash can was covered in maggots.

It was pretty funny watching the two teams bid pretty high until they realized that they were both improbable winners. I want to say that we had another double family in the same tourney. We were pretty hardcore for a while. Good times!

My brother, as a teenager, had a tank full of terrapins and one softshell turtle that shared the snapping variety's extremely extendable neck. When he went to uni we had to rehome them and picking up the softshell was like trying to grab a booby-trapped bar of homicidal soap. What a day.

It is both funny and instructive how eager so many powerful individuals and institutions with massively grandiose understandings of their own significance have been to discard every value they've ever professed or pretended to in order to protect the dumbest, shittiest rich guy of his generation.

(A Thread) A bit ago we discovered a quince tree in the front garden of our New Zealand rental. Last Sunday I was enjoying an early morning cup of tea by the living room window only to spot an elderly lady sneaking up to the tree, looking like she was casing the thing for a diamond heist. (1)

As Cory Doctorow points out, the same grifters who were peddling crypto and NFTs last year are now lining up to peddle "AI" now. I don't believe that what we have now is completely without value, but just like any new invention, it'll just be another tool in the toolbox.

Right there with you. I do software development and also help new developers. I've been having to explain pretty regularly that, no, an LLM is not going to be able to do a programmer's job. Not now, not in 20 years. I even had to explain it to my young (and talented) coworker.

Cool! I think I'll read up to the end of Act 1 in the comic, then finish all the books, then I can read the rest of the comic. You might want to add that to the FAQ. Also, it wasn't super clear from the FAQ what "Act 1" was, until I looked at the super spoiler summary.
