In the wake of the British and French election results, expect a wave of concerned editorials about how the right must moderate its extreme positions and rhetoric if it wants to appeal to the majority hahahahahahahahahahaha

It was similar when I started seeing live music in clubs in Los Angeles in 1980... literally the 1st band I ever saw was Wall of Voodoo (trashy punk/electronic) opening for the Go-Go's; the next night, the opener was the Plugz (Hispanic punk). The powers that be hadn't figured out the rules yet.

Lou goes on to say: LOU REED: Our first gig in San Francisco... we were booked into this black club where we’re opening for Bobby Blue Bland. We’re playing exactly the same music. And they were very polite to us. (laughter) You’ve gotta imagine doing “Heroin” in this club in 1966.

Genres apparently hadn't hardened yet... from a 2009 interview at the New York Public Library: DAVID FRICKE: [there's] a really beautiful poster at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. and you were on the bill with the Butterfield Blues Band and Sly and the Family Stone. LOU REED: It must have been great.

The media isn't interested in the biggest technology story of the 2020s, the rapid transition to clean energy, because 1) it will destroy a bunch of oil based wealth and is a boring, competirive low margin business 2) it makes Democrats look good for helping it and they want Republicans to win

Far be it from me to compliment the Times' political section, but this is a good baseline to send to friends who are lovable morons, vaingloriously checked out, recently awoke from a snakebite-induced coma, or have spent the last half-decade on a well-deserved bender.

No idea. I never saw the final book, but I'm guessing my comment was ignored. Given his apparent dedication to the cause of racism, it's hard to imagine that a stray criticism from a copyeditor would deter him. Always been glad that I did what I could to object, though.

Decades ago, I was a copyeditor of academic books, and a chapter by Richard Lynn was one of the rare times I ventured out of my lane to express (as professionally as I could) that the author was spouting obvious BS that could offend readers.

I wonder if Jesus was ever asked his opinion on the ten commandments and gave some kind of response along the lines of "love your neighbor as yourself" that would be awkward for rightwing conservatives to plaster in every schoolroom. Alas, no way to find out, guess we'll never know

Getting into live music in a fortuitous time and place -- L.A. in the early '80s, with a thriving small-club scene -- my list here is quite long: Laurie Anderson, the Bangles, Wall of Voodoo, Dwight Yoakam, the Rembrandts (then members of Great Buildings), Nels Cline (now of Wilco)...

The takeaway from this piece is that (a) Trump is drawing people to white evangelical Christianity, even as most religions lose adherents, but (b) for most of the newly converted, Donald Trump is more central to their faith than Jesus Christ.

I don't think you can have an honest conversation about the "partisan divide" unless you're honest about the fact that one of just two major parties is waging a fascist assault on democracy, the rule of law, and truth itself

Most R voters will never admit the Biden economy is strong. But swing voters and Dem leaners who report healthy finances, yet believe the national economy is weak, are surely reachable, and could be the difference between being under and above water.

The information environment for Dems is lousy, and Dem policymakers and funders alike have chronically underestimated the hazard of motivated actors buying up swaths of U.S. news infrastructure to feed people garbage. (Okay: more _because_ Dem policymakers & funders have underestimated that risk.)

Florida continues to slide into far-right authoritarianism because Republicans won the 2018, 2014, & 2010 elections for governor by a 1-point margin or less. That let Republicans stack Florda's Supreme Court, gerrymander the crap out of the state, suppress voting, etc. Every election matters

seems like a norm whereby "if you, as president, attempt to overturn the Constitution and install yourself as dictator for life, then every prosecutor in the land will get your ass" (not even what we are doing, but never mind) would be a good one

If people don't think Trump's first name is "Convicted Felon", then Democrats have done something very wrong. Seriously, this is something you build a narrative around (yes, I realize professional Dems don't do narrative construction, but a boy can dream, can't he?)
