I liked the new Quiet Place movie. I really enjoyed "Pig" and thought Sarnoski seemed to preserve some of his artful touches in spite of the studio pressures that must be involved in making a big movie. Also felt the cat was a nice nod to "Alien". And Lupita Nyong'o was flawless.

for being so sensitive to sound, the Quiet Place monsters sure are fucking loud. It's like, imagine if there was a species that hunted exclusively by smell, but also they all smelled like rancid shellfish.

This will be an interesting day to reflect on in the future. "Battery cells at $50/kWh means the technology to decarbonize most of road transport globally is already here, as opposed to in some future scenario." EVs are cheaper than ICE now. Today.

The application for the Society for Music Theory's Diversity in Course Design award is live. Submissions accepted until Aug 31 this year. The bulk of the application is your syllabus, the rest is a light lift. I'm chairing the committee + happy to answer Q's.

Just to be clear, the current NYT home page is 4 stories about Biden's age, plus another editorial board urging him to withdraw, plus about how Trump is moderating the GOP on abortion.

When I think of Oberlin, I think of a guy I know who went there. He was a Bulgarian percussionist at my arts high school who went around campus making all kinds of Ben Burtt-esque sound effects with his mouth when he was happy. Which he usually was. Anyway, he’s a world-renowned conductor now

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

The facts are *only* in dispute.
1. No official records exist about whether profs are liberal or conservative. That's a good thing--in a free society, we don't require such records. Any surveys are small, strictly voluntary, often poor in quality. 1/3 🧵

Can't be impeached because presidential impeachment has been a dead letter since parties came into existence. Can't be disqualified from office. And can't be prosecuted for crimes committed under color of office.

Even though its 80 yrs old, I still teach Paul Lazarfelds ‘The Peoples Choice’ study about how voters make up their minds in elections vis a vis mass media bc it basically hit the nail on the head. Summarized, his main takeaway was “the ppl watching arent movable and the movable ppl arent watching”

I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.

Roberts announces that the overruling of Chevron will *not* overrule or re-open all cases decided under the Chevron framework, as a matter of stare decisis. I have limited confidence that announcement will age well, if the GOP gets to name additional Justices.
