I’ve spent at least a decade worrying over the number of right-wing folks who seem to genuinely believe that a new US Civil War would be a “short, victorious war” that they’ll easily win. It won’t be, and we’ll all lose no matter who ends up in charge, but that mindset makes it terrifyingly likely.
We can't even agree on whether to bother voting this year and I'm supposed to believe that everyone in the liberal-leftist spectrum is going to come together and take up arms against a fascist regime?
Unless the problem you have with America is you don't get shot at enough, you don't want a Civil war.
The Economy - Gone.
The gas prices - can you even get gas?
Food Deserts -maybe this term will make sense then.
Book Burning - Plenty of this - to stay warm.
How bad? No one knows.
We don't need a civil war. We can just divide into two countries like India and Pakistan did in 1947. Or Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Those went peacefully and easily, right??
Anyone posting hypotheticals for what another civil war would be like has no idea. Doomerism can’t even get to the depths we’ll see when it comes to seizing the real and symbolic levers of American power through force.
None of the many good arguments here against civil war are likely to resonate with the tens of millions of people who are fully invested in a totalitarian political cult.
A lot of the more extreme suggestions here about what Joe Biden might do about any number of problems RN lead more or less directly to either SCOTUS-driven catastrophic intervention, reversal, and collapse, or to hot civil war. That's why they're bad ideas, even as a fan of playing hardball (me)
I recall learning in history class that during the first Civil War battle, spectators with picnic lunches rode out to watch because they figured it would be over in an afternoon. Our history text insulted these fools. But it appears we have to learn the lesson again.
To be clear this would NEVER happen.
But I do find it interesting that these fossil fuel and corporate billionaires are using religion as a weapon once again to brainwash a dumb fuck cult base to do the dirty work for them and even do 20 years prison as seen with Trump's January 6 seditionists.
Winning a civil war would be losing. Even if you survive uninjured, your job is probably gone, the supply chain is broken, our reputation tattered, and new alliances and allegiances form to move around us. We would lose 50% GDP and take years upon years to recover as a best case scenario, I bet.

Never forget that significant portions of our population treat their annual Civil War reenactment excursions as an opportunity to have a nice weekend camping, drinking, and shooting guns at your friends without considering what the war they're romanticizing was about or its enormous death toll.
I'd advise ppl to watch Garland's new Civil War movie or take a week to read *Citizens* by Simon Schama on the French Revolution.

A ordinary civil war is bad enough, and would warrant this comment regardless. Anyone who thinks we should roll the dice and find out what happens when a superpower with a few thousand nukes has a civil war has REALLY not thought this through.
The supply disruptions alone will kill disabled people.
I hate our system but the system is how people get food, drugs etc.
So you need a plan to keep things flowing or people die.
My guess is we would see a bit of domestic terrorism, and some assassinations/attempts… Then shit would get locked down tight.
Once the supply chains are disrupted, people would get real cooperative real fast.

I wish that I could transmit to other people the sadness and destruction that I witnessed living with Sandinistas in Nicaragua in the mid-late ‘90s. I had gone there believing in The Glorious Revolution. I did not come back believing in it.

My Union family sent the "delicate" boys to the Civil War because it would be warmer down South for the winter.
A few even made it back home, but it does show that this attitude has been around for a while.
Not only are civil wars Very Bad Things whose outcomes can leave things worse, there is no such thing in politics as settling something once and for all.
I certainly don't want it to happen, but I gotta be honest, I don't see how we *don't* have crippling civil unrest from here on out until "it is solved".
Too many norms have been upended, and the media smells blood in the water, and now we have fascist shitcans on TV sharpening their knives.
I don't want one at all, for all the reasons people have described.
I just increasingly find it hard to believe there's still a pathway that isn't going to end up there.
