Burke also denied, for a second time, multiple requests to have expert testimony submitted on ethics — in response, recall, to a two-year inquiry that lacked procedural safeguards because the judges conducting it said it was “not adversarial.” storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

On May 31, as I was preparing my report on the Alabama judge-shopping inquiry, two of the lawyers involved filed with Judge Liles Burke a motion to have the court take judicial notice of some items from another docket.

This is my Law Dork dive into that filing: www.lawdork.com/i/145471662/...

More here: "Isolating married white women with exceptions as the prime victims of anti-abortion laws is quite the opposite of solidarity: It elevates them above poor and Black and Brown and queer and disabled and immigrant women who faced barriers to terminating pregnancies well before Roe fell."

Gift link. NPS crews only staff HALF the positions they're hiring for because they don't get enough applications? Building trails is the best/favorite job I've ever had in my life, and if I didn't have a toddler, I'd go right back to it.

Mike Schmidt drew one of the worst hands in American politics. Elected on a reform platform, he immediately saw a sustained and effective wildcat police strike, while ultra-cheap, powerful, and newly legalized fentanyl and P2P meth flooded a pandemic-struck city already facing a housing crisis

You'd think that preemptively declaring fraud if you lose would be disqualifying in the eyes of the other participants in a democratic process, but aside from a few voices (Mr Sargent among them) we're not hearing the outcry one would expect from this pattern of behavior by GOPer pols. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For many years, climate change was treated as a problem of rising sea levels and temperatures. Only coastal cities and super hot places would suffer — others could even gain, right? Guess what: Porto Alegre is 120km from the coast, with LA-style temperatures — and it is now underwater.

According to this poll released today, immigration isn’t the top issue — it’s the sixth.

Americans care more about threats to democracy and health care, and almost as much about gun violence.

Is the @nytimes.com following the Will of the People, writing as much about those issues as the border?

Current estimates say that every prompt you give a generative "AI" system— not each session, every PROMPT— is like pouring a 16 oz bottle of water onto the ground. This is a fact that goes somewhere in every talk i give, now, & i always see audience members looking it up… and then looking horrified

When I tweeted this stuff the other day, Dataminr was the tool I was thinking about. It’s highly manipulable. DHS will pull tweets about “outside agitators,” paraphrase them & email 5,000 police, who then feed that back the press, now with that real “intelligence” feel. It’s rumor laundering.
