I would also love to understand why the debate performance counts for so much, but nothing prior or since seems to matter at all?

This goes double for debate and interview panic and a seemingly ambivalent shrug from the administration. Biden, the Dems, whomever isn't gonna save us. Like those 12 jurors in NYC, it was always gonna be up to us, the people, to hold Trump accountable because no one else is willing to do so.

I got a pretty bad feeling this doesn't stop with President Biden. If he were to drop out, I feel like we'd see a deluge of media criticism for Vice President Harris or Gov. Whitmer or Gov. Newsom or Sec. Buttigieg or any other Democrat while Trump gets a pass. Call it a hunch.

If Democrats are confused about how to handle tough questions about their nominee's fitness for office, they can just look at the thousands of examples of Republicans avoiding, deflecting, and redirecting similar questions about Trump over the past 8 years.

the abortion stuff is a huge wildcard. it has driven huge voter turnout in local races and it is on a ton a ballots. So it could easily skew the hell out of results. And who knows if that would also have an impact in house/senate races.

The problem is this is just a really hard election to properly model; in some profound ways it's not like any election up to 2016, and has some very important differences to 2016 or 2020 too in lots of important directions. Which isn't great for anxiety. But it does mean it's still all to play for.

pretty stunning how the billionaire class(and yes that means the legacy media) have completely turned on Biden. They'd rather have a fascist dictatorship than pay taxes and a living wage to employees. Insane power grab in front of the cameras

Biden didn’t get up and perform athletic feats but it seems like a pretty normal interview from an old guy? This is the single greatest moment of political derangement I have ever witnessed in this country. The president gives a normal interview and everyone says… he must join Nixon and resign?

I gotta say that people are having a lot of trouble distinguishing cognitive decline (Trump) from age-related changes in expression (Biden). Biden is elderly and talks like it. Trump literally does not have preserved reality-testing

The fact that all of the hot takes about Biden take the form of “I’m worried about the voters thinking he’s incapable” rather than “I do sincerely think he’s incapable” is perhaps the strongest evidence it’s a ratfuck.

Because Biden cannot win this game. The only desirable outcome is total capitulation to Project 2025 cos the rich want more tax cuts and less regulations and the media sites want more clicks.

I don't think a hypothetically flawless performance could end this news cycle. The NYT has decided they're going to win this or die trying. Guess we'll see if 3+ weeks of vapid headlines hurts their subscription numbers or Biden's poll numbers more.

I don’t think Biden is exceptional in this interview but if you don’t understand reporters are gonna do a million variations of: “are you senile and/or resigning?” Til they get bored or he does I have bad news for you.

Nothing he does will be enough for the pundit class. Even if he did jump/get pushed out, Harris would not be good enough either, nor would (insert Dem candidate name here). This is an unwinnable game. Just get on the trail and take the message to the voters.

I am totally blown away by the coverage of this as a scandal. His age is not a scandal, it's a fact! We knew how old he was in 2020 and in the primary this year. He had a bad night in an unusual format and has been fine since. It's insanity.

The biggest issue with Biden coverage is that he’s now The Story, which means that most of the press is focused on The Story and not any of the context or consequences. If we were having a serious discussion about qualifications for presidency, age, and the two main candidates, I’d be fine with it.

Listen, if the Biden campaign wanted to quell concerns about his age, they would have put him out there, like in the post-debate pressroom, a rally, an event at the Stonewall monument, a national address, a medal of honor ceremony, a meeting with governors, another rally, and televised interview.
