I seriously want a game show format vs debates instead. What do they think basic things cost? Do they know basic things about government? More people would watch and we'd learn a lot more about candidates than we do in traditional debates.

I want a courtroom debate. Candidates under oath. Judge for a moderator. Attorneys are partisans for each side that ask them questions and cross-examine. Perjury is enforced with jail time. All televised.

I think they did this one so that they could say they had done it, neither could say they refused the other's demand. It was useless for any information gathering purposes. It might have been useful if the moderators had done their damn jobs, or if they had nearly realtime onscreen fact checking.

I was JUST saying this!! Back in the day, it was the quickest, easiest way to learn about platforms and whatnot. We have the internet now. We can search and see what they stand for. Historically, bad debate performance is used as some measure of governing ability. The two are not equivalent.

It was fine when the candidates took their turn speaking and answered issue-based questions. What's your solution to x? How much would your plan cost and how would you pay for it? It's become an anklebiting, fingerpointing, shoutfest. People need graphs to make sense of any of it.
