if there’s any issue on which “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good” applies to Biden it’s climate - the IRA has been a tremendous success beyond all expectations and the news on the renewable energy front is excellent depressing to see it lumped in with issues on which he’s actually bad

I think part of the difficulty is that the messaging from the admin is a bit convoluted. they'll brag about their climate stuff and then also brag about approving more drilling permits in order to chase the mythical moderate. this is what happens when you do that kinda thing

Biden has poured big money into clean energy, which is great, and may be the most effective long-term solution. But he hasn’t implemented a piss-lots-of-people-off policy like cap and trade. (And it’s not like he could have gotten Manchin’s vote for that.) So he doesn’t get the credit.

Can you be more specific when you say the IRA has been a tremendous success, and can you explain how its benefits outweigh the costs of Biden's expansion of fossil fuel exports?

progressives don't seem to understand that the alternative to Biden on pretty much every issue you can imagine is immeasurably worse. The only way to get better alternatives on the left is to humiliate the republicans so bad that they move away from the democracy doomsday scenario

People are really impatient. It's ridiculous. The iRA is phenomenal and it is doing great things. But they've literally only just started.

American politicians are so much worse than rando industrialized country (non-oil-state) politicians that there is a chance that Trump would be better because everyone would freeze the US out of international agreements if he was President. With Biden those agreements would be far worse.

Dude went out on a limb and made it his signature legislation, got it through a 50/50 senate with a literal coal baron as the deciding vote, probably single-handedly (well, along with Xi) put us on a "might actually make it" trajectory, and his reward was "he did oil leases so fuck him"

I think IRA might have been a slightly unfortunate acronym. My first thought does not go to the environment.

iirc a group of climate scientists revised their worst case climate scenarios down the day the IRA passed. It is the most consequential climate legislation in my lifetime, and in a second term with the House and Senate we get it again.

This feels like kind of left-wing trolling gone bad...or maybe the Oil companies paid influencers to be doomers or something. Wouldn't put it past them!

If you’re young, progressive and want to mitigate global heating, one question you need to ask yourself is, “Which of two candidates— the only two who can win— will we have the most influence over, Biden or Trump?” Answer that question and vote accordingly. Not voting = voting for the latter.

I think the bad news involving Biden allowing more Oil fracking and drilling and his bombing and fires caused people to think that Biden did more harm to the environment than good... Biden has been a mixed bad on the environment... he's been very harmful, but also very positive. Mixed bag president.

I think it's because the reality of getting these things made into policy is much different than what anyone imagined. People want drama and the gritty work of getting these things through a hostile Senate and past incredibly hostile major industries is just not the stuff of heroic fiction.

the thing with climate is every tenth of a degree matters it's not "well, we're over 2C, we're doomed, the end" 2.5C is worse than 2.4 is worse than 2.3, etc. do we need to do much more? absolutely, but literally any marginal climate improvement is important

The environment is a crisis. What Biden has done is not nothing, but it's not good. When islands are sinking, people are dying, wildfires and hurricanes are out of control..."we've slowed down how fast it's getting worse" is not a great message. And Dems' message failures don't help either:

Utter madness to abandon a candidate for not doing enough for climate change when the alternative is a candidate who takes money and support from climate change deniers.

Seems more and more like it was a messaging mistake not to call it something about climate. OTOH I bet "I passed the Inflation Reduction Act" plays real well if you can convince voters to acknowledge inflation is down.
