Some people in the replies are going “jeez only 30%?” and it’s like do you know how hard it is to lose 30% of an entire giant business solely because the owner is an annoying doofus?
Still feels low given how much worse that site is to the degree that people like me, who are determined to stay there like an old man that won't abandon his home in a disaster movie, are starting to second guess how worth it is to stick around
Okay, but there's ALSO the fact that Xitter is crawling with Nazis.
Oh yeah --- maybe, like, 70% of the normies left, but 40% of them were replaced by Nazis. I could believe that.
Went from a power user to abandoning it when I went on vacation in August.
I can go to sites which I don’t agree with management but I can not square myself with this type of hate and propaganda.
I know. Company I worked for got bought by Rick Scott’s Columbia/HCA just months before they got busted for fraud. We were never HCA - they didn’t know what to do with us - but no matter. Lost >50% business in a year.
Course, this is more fraudulent annoying doofus. Still hate that jerk.
Inertia is a problem. I work for a govt dept with an account on X (they all do) and I've talked to comms about having policies to decide when a platform is too crazy. But they stay because they've had an account for years.
As for the account I still hold there because reasons (and not related to this one at all) that remaining 70% are most likely crypto hustlers, MAGA freaks, AI bots and masochists. 🥹
30 percent has to equal unstoppable death spiral in the social media business. How much engagement did MySpace bleed before they were just living out their final hours? This product is basically all about being in the cool place to hang and I don't know if that's a thing that can be reclaimed.
maybe the Nazis, Trolls, Bots, Racists, Traitors, Seditionists, angry, Ignorant poorly educated Science & Fact hating Christian Nationalists, terrorist organizations, & Pedophiles he allows to run amok w/ no moderation on his platform might have soured the X experience for the rest of Sane America
to lose 30% of business
that people invested 10 Years of network effects into,
is significant
to lose only 30% because the owner is a Nazi sympathizer,
is disappointing
I’m honestly hoping they pull the trigger on basic accounts costing 10 cents a month or whatever just to find out how far off the rails this whole thing can get
The entire SaaS platform is mortally dependent on user growth. Oftentimes having low or no growth is a kiss of death; a recognizable brand losing 30% of the userbase is nearly unthinkable. Catastrophic.
Or strange moderation choices. I got banned last year for sharing like a 3 second clip of the film Charlie Wilson’s War in rhetorical support of Ukraine.
The flip side is that this is a growth period for digital platforms. Reddit and YouTube are booming. Under sane management, Twitter would be up 50% instead of down 30%.
It used to be my only social media, but when he turned the maga monkeys loose, it became unusable. It’s not good for anyone to have a steady diet of negativity and alienation.
That is roughly 1 in three people leaving cause one person let an annoying fart in the room. This is actually really messed up beyond belief. This one man made the environment of the website hostile.
i mean, musk can't create and maintain enough sockpuppets on his own to keep the site afloat can he?
even with his ketamine habit he has to sleep sometime.
I'm part of that 30%. I deleted my account the day he took over. Never looked back and I refuse to call it anything else but Twitter because "X" makes it sound like a drug or porn site (that one is kinda accurate though, tbh) and just straight unimaginative.
It would be more but a lot of the people surprised that it’s not more are still active on there because of addiction to their (mostly) bot followers feeding them precious likes
They also aren't taking in the snowball effect; every person from that third of users who left makes staying feel even worse for those remaining, so more will leave, creating a virtuous cycle of defectors. Love it. The world doesn't need Twi- uh, ""X"" anymore. Cross it out like its name implies.
That. And the NAZIs. And the endless disinformation and Christian nationalist propaganda. And millions of online stores with blue checks. And the 'AI model' accounts.
There was a large decrease in Twitter's usability, in addition to the knob that runs it.
30% seems low.
i've tried to get people to move, but all my sports follows are finding the other apps don't work for breaking news and stuff. it will take time for every use case to find an alternative.
Throwing something out there but this 30% figure is despite the fact that he's stonewalling any and every insight by qualified orgs to scrutinize the site's metrics. I bet that percentage is even higher
