Is NYT talking about the jokes about disabled people or the jokes about women or are they just talking about Trump's dangerous targeting of people he hates?
Is the schtick about siccing his mob on journalists funny?
I've always correlated a sense of humor with intelligence.
Trump's inability to be funny is one of the reasons I've always considered him to be an idiot. His agonizingly long and excruciatingly well-documented track record as an absolute idiot might also have something to do with it.
He most certainly uses humor to bond with his cult. It's just that it's *their* kind of humor, not ours. Cruelty, demeaning put-downs--they *laugh* at that.
He’s “funny” only to those who share his injurious “aggressive humor” style (ridicule, criticism, sarcasm) associated with psychopathy, Machiavellianism, borderline personality, & antagonism. Antagonistic people (cold, callous, & manipulative) use aggressive humor to dominate or intimidate others.
Trump has the rhythms and speech patterns that a lot of people associate with “funny,” because they’re copied from the patterns of late-night opening monologues. Specifically Carson and Leno.
The “Elizabeth Warren, did you hear about this?” sort of thing.
Only times that comes to mind are the times he was unintentionally funny, usually doing something stupid. Like spitballing around the prospect of buying Greenland, or drawing over maps with Sharpie thinking no one would notice.
But I also wouldn't say that was "forging bonds" with voters.
Honestly, I do think Biden is funny, he just has a dry sense of humor. He's certainly funnier than Trump, which I know is a low bar, but still
Like his presidential memo about Kissinger? Hilarious if you're fluent in political speech. "We often disagreed." Period, end of sentence.
The NYT politics desk loves Trump so much they struggle to conceal it. The vile river of filth that streams from his mouth is something they can enjoy from their detached perch above the fray. "Oh how droll!"
He makes jokes that aren't funny. Like Twitter does. They were so unfunny, Twitter banned him & he made his own Twitter. That Twitter is going bankrupt. All so he can make jokes that aren't funny.
Now, THATS a funny joke. & Trump nor Twitter will ever get it.
Not only was orange thing never funny, but I never understood why ppl thought RR was. On news they were also announcing b4 a clip that RR had been SO funny & they'd show it & move on & I'd be going, "Wait, you forgot to show the funny part."
Trump isn’t funny as someone who tries to be funny, but as a walking weirdness that people still get to make fun of because it’s punching up (or at least laterally). As is too often the case, the NYT is fucking deranged on this take.
I don't think Trump is generally funny when he's trying to be funny. His actual humor is cruel. But the way he speaks is sometimes funny. Whether that should be compared to someone actually being charming, that's a stretch.
Who the fuck is this idiot? Fascists aren't humorists. Trump is all about hate. I understand that the NYT is all in for the hater side but this is dumb.
“Low-Energy Jeb” is one of the funniest things a politician has ever said.
Also, calling Liz Warren “Pocahontas”. I’m sorry yeah he’s a prick but it’s just, objectively funny.
The one joke I ever heard him deliver that was recognizable *as* a joke was when he riffed on Melania cribbing a speech from Michelle Obama, and he used that to simultaneously jab at the press and deride his wife.
So, no, he punches down and he's a dick. His fellow assholes may think he's funny.
Josh Barro says this too, and it always perplexed me.
Then it occurred to me that, although I like listening to him, I don't think Josh has ever made me laugh. It may just people with a really low bar for comedy.
I have a measure of FOMO that's keeping me from canceling my subscription, but I'm really thinking I need to do it. I don't know how they could be more blatantly pro-Trump without simply endorsing him.
He has an eye for weakness (or more accurately, perceived weakness) and lots of people find him hitting people at their weakest spot to be funny. He's a bully, but there are always other kids on the playground who laugh at the bully's put-downs.
That is the stupidest thing I've read in a long while. That man has no sense of humor. He can't tell jokes or understand them. There's a spot on British analysis of his lack of humor, but I can't remember who wrote it.
I mean yeah Trump “forged bonds with voters through humor” but I thought we all broadly agreed it was terrible for society that he just says hideously cruel shit all the time which empowers other cruel people to feel comfortable laughing loudly at it in public as a power flex
He was never funny. In the old days he appear semi-regularly on Letterman and he wasn’t funny then either. The only thing funny was Letterman making fun of him. And if you watch those clips he can’t even laugh. All he can manage is that forced semi-smile.
"Funny" Calling Stormy horse faced. Calling Carly Fiorina unelectable "because look at that face". Marco had small feet, Cruz's wife is ugly & crazy, etc. I've yet to see the humor.
