Apparently someone at the Boston Fire Department had a wonderful, vindicating day yesterday, during the 911 outage:

I asked for and received a walk-through of the emergency system in providence back in the nineties and even back then was completely gobsmacked to find it was a card catalog system, and a bunch of analog circuits.

That’s awesome! My brother is a firefighter in Baltimore and was up for a wedding a few weeks ago and the restaurant we had the reception at in the north end had one right outside and he told me about those.

I’ve been told by BFD to use the alarms if you are being accosted or in any physical danger. They will arrive a lot faster than BPD.

Still, he has a point. How many times has the power gone out and the cashier can't make change because the electric cash register usually computes that? It's always a good idea to have an analogue/low tech back-up

It’s not infrastructure, but my FIL was a finishing carpenter and has been retired for years, but keeps getting called into the shop once every few weeks because they can’t find anyone else who knows how to cut and grind the crown moulding knives to the standard they require.

This is the same fire box system that was in place during the Cocoanut Grove Fire in 1942. From Boston Fire Historical Society: "In a strange coincidence, at 10:15PM, the BFD received and transmitted Box 1514, located at Stuart and Carver Streets...about three blocks from the Cocoanut Grove." 1/2

I had forgotten about those things! My little hometown had them until about 2002 or so. One of my great uncles was fire chief of one of our (many, still sorted by immigrant ethnicity) volunteer fire departments and would manually walk to a box every noon to pull and test one.

stuff like this makes me grin because you get that mental image of a crazy old heavy white bearded dude that everyone rolled their eyes at for so long but knows what the pivotal piece of infrastructure is and insisted people train on it even though they thought he was nuts.

Wires and electricity seem pretty iffy. Even after telegraphs handled city to city messages, the fastest way to get in touch in many big cities was a system of vacuum tubes sucking papers and small items through underground tunnels. Paris even had synchronized clocks driven by pressurized air

this reminds me of the last act of Independence Day when they use the telegraph to communicate internationally after all the electronics go down. the other time I was reminded of that was when we got rid of all the telegraphs. glad Boston Fire still has these!
