Leash your dog. Yes, you. Yes, your sweet dog. Leash your dog. Not only because of the harm it could do, but because you have no right to put other people through the stress of not knowing what it will do. EVEN IF you can predict your dog (you can’t), other people shouldn’t have to rely on it.
My ACD stays leashed in public places and has a high vis leash so others see it from afar. I think it helps quite a bit as I’ve seen many dog owners who foolishly take their dog out leashless grab theirs by the collar when they see mine.
And just shouting "don't jump" at your free range dog and then doing nothing when it does jump on the poor passerby (who really dislikes strange dogs jumping on them) isn't helpful
Word.
One fashionable trend I've seen picking up in my neighborhood dog park is other dog stewards escorting their pups from their SUV (always an SUV) leashless to the dog park gate.
Probably the worst place outside a daycare to get cocky with your animal, given the chaos.
Dogs are animals folks
I just nearly lost two goat kids to a dog running at large. One is still in pretty rough shape. He was incredibly close to death when we got to the Vet.
also use a fucking muzzle when in close conditions like public transport. no disrespect to your dog who I'm sure is the sweetest most laid-back dog ever, but it will still lash out when somebody steps on it unintentionally. USE A MUZZLE!
The trail I take in a local park has signs to leash your dog, due to birds and squirrels. I’ve been jumped on by goldens and labs. Once had a GSD running toward me. He looked friendly (and was!) but come on people ☹️
This should extend (no pun) to all this retractable leash bs as well
I used to use a 20 ft line to exercise my horse, it is NOT a device for keeping a dog under heel
See also be able to handle your leashed dog. My neighborhood used to have a half Rottweiler half St. Bernard the would go insane if you came near it on a public trail. The owner would hold on for dear life and blame us for exciting the dog she admitted she had little control over. PUBLIC TRAIL LADY
My neighbor complained to me that his unleashed dog got the runs from eating cat food I put out for the community cat in the back of my carport —50 feet from the road where he’s walking his dog. He feels entitled to let his dog run up my yard and enter my buildings, and I should accommodate him.
My girl is now scared to go on walks because another dog in our complex rushed her-twice!-because it was unleashed both times.
She wasn’t hurt, but she was very freaked out and it even followed us to the front door the second time. Now going outside makes her super anxious
My eye doctors office had a dog wandering around. We tried to keep it away (cute though it was) because our cat is extremely allergic. Dog would not leave me alone. I get home, change my clothes but I can’t wash my jacket that’s hanging by the door. That exposure alone gave my cat a serious flare up
There are places I don’t walk our dog anymore because a couple folks with unfixed dogs have unleashed them there. It’s made him anxious when he sees certain breeds that *are* leashed thanks to a couple run-ins.
Either the algorithm is creepy this morning, or the universe just put this in my path. We had 5 goats killed last night, including a bottle-fed, basically a pet, because a neighbor lets their large dogs roam wherever. It’s not cute or folksy. My parents are devastated. Put boundaries on your pets.
I live near an off-leash park, and about every quarter, somebody's dog decides to come at me. Usually, they slather me with creek mud (and just enough claws to break my skin and get that exciting bacteria in there), but occasionally, I get an aggro one.
Just got bit this week trying to protect my leashed dog from the neighbor’s unleashed dog that forced its way into our apartment. (everyone involved is okay now.)
My biggest pet peeve right there. Hate the panic of having to pick up my dog and hope that the unleased one charging towards us isn't going to attack. I have to pick him up because, like you said, he's leased and he will flip out in defense.
I have two 100 pound, very chill bouviers and when a leashed dog lunges at them, they ignore the dog. I always worry about the aggressive unleashed dogs because if they hurt one of my dogs, both would fight and that would be a mess.
I remember someone telling the story of an unleashed dog running up on her and her leashed dog and the other dog's owner was calling "Don't worry! He's friendly!" and she shouted back "MY dog ISN'T!" and THEN the other dog's owner suddenly cared.
Exactly, many people have ptsd from being attacked by dogs and when in a public space you are an a-hole if you prance around with your dog unleashed. How many times have I heard, 'my dog never bit anyone...' Well, there is always a first.
I was looking out the window yesterday, and watched someone like 6 houses down a dog just walk into the street while the owner was trying to talk to someone in a stopped car, and they struggled to get the dog to return to the sidewalk.
Dogs that hurt people or other animals are not “bad,” which is why it’s irrelevant that your dog is “good.” If your “good” dog who’s unleashed runs up on a leashed dog, and that leashed dog flips its shit because it realizes it can’t defend itself or run away, you are at fault.
I called out neighbor on NextDoor bc her dog (a Newfie?) chased a bunny across a busy road, almost got hit, then rush my Frenchie being walked by hubs & I had to get between. Recently dog was around the corner out of her sight. Hubs almost hit her bc she walked behind his car AS HE WAS BACKING IN!
It’s *super* unfair to both dogs when one is leashed and the other isn’t. You never know how that dynamic is going to play out. Leash your goddamn dog.
People with unleashed dogs are always like "Don't worry, he's nice!"
I don't care that he's *nice*, I care that one of my first memories was our family dog biting me on the eye and putting me in the emergency room. Fuck right off & control your dog, you don't get to tell me what to not-worry about.
When our dog was a puppy she was attached by a giant dog that got away from its owner. I scooped our puppy up and it was safe, but the big dog bit my leg hard. To this day our dog is still skittish around other dogs and overprotective of me, and it's easy to see how people can lose pets like this.
I've worked at state parks and nature preserves and despite me wearing a uniform, some people STILL refuse to put their dogs on leash when I tell them to. It's incredible (derogatory).
Even when I try to educate (so many reasons why!) they just don't want to hear it.
YES! “He’s friendly!”
Well my dog is not friendly to dogs charging her. She’s a reactive rescue dog. We have a leash law, yet I’ve had to stop going to certain parks, etc. because people are selfish & lazy.
A friend of mine was walking his dog on leash when they were attacked by 2 dogs running loose. The dog survived with injuries, but my friend was injured by the dogs, including bites and re-injuring his knee that had been recently operated on… I love dogs but not clueless owners
100%. My dog is the sweetest, but she’s bouncy and unpredictable, and I don’t want her running into traffic. My last dog had a vibe that made some other dogs super hostile and he was attacked several times, making him reactive, which increased the vibe…not good.
My parent's first dog was off leash (it was the 1970s) when it saw another dog across the street. She ran over to meet the other dog and got run over by a car. The leash is for your own dog's safety as much as anything else.
When my grandmother was 95, an “enthusiastic” unleashed dog ran up to her & knocked her to the ground, banging her head. Luckily (she lived to 101), as the doctor said: “Your mother-in-law has a very hard head.” To which my mother replied “You. Have. No. Idea…” Regardless, it could have killed her.
My neighbor never leashed or collared her dog, and it got loose in a hurricane. Dogs don't understand cars or hurricanes and get spooked by loud noises. They are safer if a human who knows how to deal with all these things has them on a leash!
People who don't leash their dogs make me crazy. I've had unleashed dogs try to run in front of my car multiple times, thankfully there's never been an accident, but I'm like dude seriously just use a leash
My old dog Turbo was poorly socialized to other dogs, could go from playing to fighting at the drop of a hat. Always had him on a leash outside the house.
People would let their unleashed dog run up to him saying "he's friendly" and like...why are you assuming mine is?
"It's okay, he's friendly!" Tell that to my boy who's half his size, while your 70-pounder tries to aggressively get in his face. And to me, who has to try to put my body in between them, wondering if this is the day I go to the hospital for a dog attack.
Also stop using retractable leashes. They’re dangerous and inadequate. Get a nice fixed-length thick rope and just deal with it.
I have seen so many close calls between tangles at the park and traversal through elevators.
As long as the doggo is not kept attached to a chain 24/7. That's just inhuman. We made that illegal here in Latvia this year. But yeah, in public places with people around dogs have to be on a leash at all times.
Thankfully, I have a pet snake now. And five tarantulas. And stick bugs. 😃
As a guide dog handler, YES!
If a strange dog has a go at my dog, my training is to drop his harness. This leaves me trapped with an aggressive dog, but lets him escape.
It’s happened. It’s terrifying. It’s what I remember every time we’re approached by an unleashed dog.
The number of times dogs have run up to me and my leashed dog *in my yard* with the owner 50 feet behind explaining that they are on "voice control" no, no they are not "controlled"
I am not a dog owner. I am very firmly a cat person, but I try to be polite and kind to dogs and their owners.
I spent several years with horrible anxiety around every single dog I encountered because some asshole let their dog bite me, and then laughed about it.
Even if you are the sort of human stain who cares nothing if your dog injures or kills other dogs or people, your dog will lose a fight with a fucking car. Of course, I tend to assume people like this think of their own dog as a sort of ego ornament, but hopefully that might persuade some.
I have never felt more of a righteous fury than when people would bring their dogs into my kids’ preK-3rd special needs playground and let them run around. And some of them would act like I was the asshole!
I agree with so many of the posts on here about their dogs. (Mine too is leashed & owners of unleashed dogs aren’t always as considerate when we tell them to keep their dogs away)…AND my uncle almost died when an unleashed dog darted in front of him while he was cycling.
My border collie is leash reactive, was attacked a few years ago - she has a scar on her face from it & I have PTSD. I work so hard with her on every walk & offleash dogs are my worst nightmare.
My mum was attacked by 2 dogs back home in the UK recently - can’t say more yet (she’s pressing charges)
Our little dog is regularly chased by big dogs who aren't on leashes. We had one run into our yard to chase him while the owners stood on the road and watched.
We told them we didn't want to hurt their dog, we love animals, but if he came for Buddy again, we would. They got mad at us. Jerks.
If anyone wants a little schadenfreude I highly recommend reading through all the people posting on those free legal advice websites about getting ticketed for walking their dogs off leash 😌💅
I used to be so afraid of my dog hurting an off leash dog. The amount of times I've heard "don't worry my dog won't hurt her" lol sir she pulverized a knuckle bone in 10 min I'm not worried about her. at this point, I can't control it. I'll warn folks but what happens happens.
Someone was on here recently talking about how he takes his dog off leash in the park & he didn't care if it went over and ate other people's lunch. I don't know if he was being funny, or was really a jerk. Leash laws are important for your dog and for others.
People who care enough to train their dog also care enough to respect others; all well-trained dogs are leashed.
I assume an unleashed dog is poorly trained, and the owner has little respect for others.
