Public policy student. I learned a lot about disability and eldercare as a family caregiver and the system made me so mad I went to grad school out of spite. For fun: culture, linguistics, historical architecture and fashion, walkable cities, cats

Getting real tired of folks who act like saying you'd rather be shot in the foot than shot in the head means you're extolling the virtues and benefits of being shot in the foot, like, in general.

Library funding is almost always justified through patron numbers. The more people a library serves, the more funding it gets. So even if you don't regularly use a public library, get a library card. It costs you nothing and helps everyone in your community.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

I think we could all use a bit of pick-me-up right about now, so seeing as it's July 3rd, why don't we once again reflect on one of the greatest white supremacist self-owns in military history:

What gives me hope are the normal people trying to save things. People running for school board against moms for liberty freaks, college kids protesting, local newsrooms investigating corruption etc. They inspire but also make me pissed off at the powerful people/institutions that won’t defend them

🧵 In 2020, I nearly died from mysterious industrial chemical exposure at my apartment. Later, I discovered my employer was dumping toxic waste into our windows from their Skunkworks semiconductor fab next-door. I tipped off US EPA, who then raided them in 2023. EPA sent me the report on Friday. 💀 ⬇️

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1

In light of Taylor Swift making crochet cool again, please, please, PLEASE remember this when searching for your own version of her crochet dress!!!!! Crochet can NOT be done by a machine. It HAS to be done by hand. If you find a $25 crocheted dress, someone was criminally underpaid to crochet it.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.

I still haven’t seen or heard of this bribery decision through any news source, just on here. I thought the news about Chevron was relatively niche (in my textbook as a first-year MPP student) but even that has got more mainstream attention.

One thing that’s helpful to keep in mind here, imo, is that these days it’s not really clear just what an editorial board is for, and so as a result editorial boards at big papers are constantly engaged in the project of justifying their own relevance
