Everything's complicated and my hesitation about replacing Biden up to now has been informed by polls showing other candidates not doing much better. But a lot of people seem remarkably certain that Harris specifically could not win a general election for reasons I think they should say out loud.

Kendrick Lamar teaches us that, in public debate, refuting your opponent's arguments point by point is less effective than identifying your opponent's single greatest weakness and maintaining message discipline.

So if you just call colas soda, what's your general term for sodas? Carbo-Bev?

Funny, I do the opposite of this. Except instead of iced tea I usually order something alcoholic if they don't have Pepsi.

Are you doing the reverse? Using "soda" to specifically mean cola?

this is a new one.
I have heard online that there are supposedly parts of the country where "coke" is used as a generic term for soda in general (Pepsi, Sprite, Fanta, anything sweet and carbonated)
although I have never actually encountered any evidence of this IRL.

honestly, I don't think the debate is going to affect Biden's numbers for the same reason I don't think being convicted of 34 crimes is affecting Trump's.
Voters are just so partisan these days. 90% of them made up their minds which way to vote this November years ago and aren't gonna change.

the end of Chevron deference is another manifestation of the fact that the Roberts Court doesn’t view itself as part of the constitutional order as much as lording over it

Seems notable that on the two abortion cases -- the two most likely to cause political backlash in November -- the court dismissed on standing, a result that quells the anger, but doesn't stop it from taking a more extremist position later.

like, both anti-AI hysteria and insane AI boosterism lead you to the same conclusion, that this technology is existentially dangerous, and any treatment of this kind of completely fictional horseshit as serious helps feed those (baseless) fears

the climate story right now is in a very weird state of flux
a) the warming we've priced in is bad and really starting to show itself
b) the renewable story is astoundingly good and getting better
we are left with "warming is going to get worse but almost certainly not as much as it could have"

If money was all it took to win elections, Michael Bloomberg would be coasting towards a second term in the White House.
That being said, it sure doesn't hurt.

Wealth inequality has significantly improved over Biden’s presidency, in large part because times are so good for young people. Unfortunately young people are also spending more time learning about and being mad at wealth inequality, so they’re acting as if times were worse than before.

I'd bet quite a lot of money that the median member of Globe Twitter has a negative opinion of PRWORA, and the median member of Rose Twitter has no idea what that is.

You can tell they are too, because they call real money "fiat", as though crypto isn't itself a perfect textbook example of a fiat currency.

Idk if I believe "absolute power corrupts absolutely" but a thing I definitely do believe is that giving precisely the amount of power a forum mod has to someone who volunteers to have that power works out badly in basically every instance it's been tried.
