How am I supposed to explain health insurance to my children. How do I look them in the eye and tell them about depravity and perversion such as "deductibles"
I don't want to. It's too uncomfortable. Can't the school do it? Maybe have the gym teacher come in once a week. Probably should separate the boys and girls, since insurance affects them both differently.
Unironically I had to explain that we were scheduling a necessary procedure for one of my kids the same week as Christmas because "we needed the doctor so much this year that Aetna has to pay all of the cost if it happens now, but they can make us pay $2000 next week"
You could always tell them to go give 20 years of their life to Uncle Sam so they can retire at 40 and then never worry about it.

I have explained the American insurance system to Europeans a lot since moving to Amsterdam and they are always baffled and horrified. I’ve thought of explaining the promise of GoFundMe campaigns for cancer care but I just don’t think I can spread that cruel truth to the world.
Just have them join the service, as I did straight out of high school. At least the military has actual health care, not this stupid for-profit (the shareholders, not the patients) system currently in place.
Had to explain it to a couple Italian friends coming to study here in the US for a while and it broke me to see their utter horror and confusion cuz they were 100% correct.
Save the concept of "medically necessary" for a day when everyone is really hungry and hasn't eaten in hours. And you'll play the role of insurance company holding onto and distributing the food. Each time someone claims they need food, give them the Larry David truth detector stare.
My suggestion is that you first teach them to take really good care of their health if they were lucky to be born in good health. Then teach them to vote for a party that wants Universal Health Insurance.
I opted out of health insurance when I learned what some necessary stuff costs. At least for my scenario, I’d rather just buy my glasses myself. Independent dental work isn’t crazy either being such a rare thing to do.
But I am prepared to die if an ambulance is involved in any issue I may have.
Tell them about France, tell them how it works there. And when they ask you "What about in our country ?" you can emit a long and painful laugh and leave the room.

You think deductibles are bad, just wait until you have to explain to them the concept of "coinsurance" and "maximum out of pocket," to say nothing of "preexisting conditions."
Is this a trick question? Who's insurance covers having children? The birth of my 1st born, with benefits, cost me $5k out of pocket. And that was 14 years ago.

I think you start with the bad old days and explain how it used to be even worse.
E.g. in 2000 if you suffered from a mental health issue that led to cutting/SI, your insurance could straight up deny coverage and the ER visit for stitches was all on you, full price.
Tell them that our current system can be blamed on the federal government especially the democrat party, former president Obama, their ACA (ObamaCare) and equally the swamp rats like John McCain in the GOP. What we had before government got involved was far better, not perfect but better
Oh I mostly let comedians like Trevor Noah and Hasan Minhaj explain the hard stuff. Seems to work because my teen wrote and passed a universal healthcare bill in his US government class this year.

Wife & I took turns not being covered for care when they got booboos. Made them use toys as copays. That kinda thing. Gotta start em early but they catch on.
Just do what my dad did & tell them how we used to walk in 5 feet of snow to get completely de-loused in the group showers every day we went to school, uphill both ways. To put shit perspective
