I disagree to an extent. I agree that the media has decided that no matter what Trump says/does it’s not news but Biden’s performance was legitimately concerning.

The Telegraph reports that Keir Starmer, on his first day as Prime Minister, is scrapping the "Rwanda scheme,' the Tory plan to deport all asylum seekers & undocumented immigrants to Rwanda wherever they are from.

(This was a Starmer platform promise.)

We were an illiberal democracy for a very long time. The GOP is in the process of deciding how illiberal they think we should be.

They benefit from the phenomenon whereby most reporters view the Democratic Party as the protagonist and the GOP as the antagonist and cover it accordingly.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.

The thing about taking statutory interpretation away from the agencies is that Congress actually has power over those agencies, but does not have power over the Court. It’s power grab in the guise of helping; it’s “helping” in a paternalistic, condescending, unchecked manner.

I did not watch last night (self-preservation) but I fear that Biden’s inner circle, coming from a Senate where octogenarians are common, doesn’t understand the depth of the problem. Maybe this changes things but I am skeptical.

It's only bribery if you do it in front of a notary, shake hands with the special bribery handshake, and recite the words "this bribe of current market value $5000 or more is for a corrupt action you otherwise would not perform" and the official responds "thank you for your bribe for my corrupt act"

what a win for consumer protection! far too often a bribe is made and no quid pro quo is delivered. with this decision, a standard of post-action payment is established, ensuring an equitable system in which the consumer only pays once the deed is done

I have not fully updated my mental model of politics to account for the fact that one of our two parties has decided being out of power is not worth the current level of liberal democracy and actively debating the correct level of illiberalism to impose.

Yes, if you don’t like the choice between Trump and Biden, think of it as picking between Stephen Miller and Pete Buttigieg, Steve Bannon and Deb Haaland, Michael Flynn and Lina M. Khan, Alex Jones and Jessica Rosenworcel, or Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Both sides are not “the same”

I think one of the biggest issues with the revolutionaries vs incrementalists is that progress doesn’t have an end point. You manage a problem and move on to the new one and keep working at it. Social progress is maintenance and patching and adjusting forever, there’s no Mission Accomplished moment

Holding snakes by the tail isn't a safe way to avoid being bitten and is a very good way to injure the snake. If you need to move a snake and you're not sure if its venomous, squirting it with a hose from several feet away in order to get it to clear out is a safe and effective option.

The concept of "kayfabe" from pro wrestling is weirdly useful for understanding elite DC political stuff. The Alito Flag story is causing so much consternation for DC elites not because it shows that pro wrestling is fake (they all know it's fake) but because Alito acknowledged it was fake.
