Didn't read Old Yeller enough as a kid, I guess. That book very correctly taught me rabies is not something you mess around with. I remember being so thankful we had a vaccine for it after I read it. People can be cruelly stupid.

To my understanding, this is different. The rabies vaccine is really hard on the body and it's not unheard of for it to kill pets. The antibodies last long after the "expiration date" of the vaccine in many, so titer testing to check for if it's needed is a win and not a conspiracy.

Our kitty Olivia caught a bat that had blundered down our chimney and was lost in the living room. (Her airborne leap and capture was genuinely spectacular) I rescued the bat, and had both cats at the vet the next day for updated rabies shots. Absolutely.

Every day in Philippines there are crowds of people at clinics getting rabies shots because they got bitten or scratched by an unvaxxed dog or cat. 89 human cases were recorded in Q1 2024, 82 from dog bites. Rabies is 100% fatal.
