You have to love these flaccid Calvinist hot takes by highly successful people. Systemic inequality is good, actually, bc it allows the elect to demonstrate their profound virtue and genius. If you are truly pious, you will achieve prosperity via God's special underwear gnome economics
I really think people who do this shit should have to live by it
Stop accepting money for your work, give away all the money you have earned, and NEVER pursue any copyright violations on any of your work ever.
Otherwise shut the fuck up
The first I ever heard of this guy was on a podcast where he was essentially described as an asshat whose books I shouldn't buy and if I want to know why I can google it... and every time that an algorithm suggests one of his books, my brain prompts, "he's that asshat whose books you shouldn't buy."
I am not scared by AI at all.. in fact it is quite helpful as an assistant.. I am just a pro-human racist.. I think of AI as beneath humans that's all.. I find AI art is a non-aesthetic genre.. it is beneath the worst that any human can possibly create.. I believe in the value of human art over AI..
I immediately resolved to adopt the band name "Flaccid Calvinist Hot Takes". Then I got to "God's Special Underwear Gnome Economics" and now I just don't even know what.
AI is a long way from being able to write decent novels, when that happens he can have a dumb opinion. If it’s not threatening your industry I don’t wanna hear it.
I’ll say what I said there: If a human inspired by my work gets a job over me, that’s one thing. If a job disappears because of an amalgam machine, it’s another.
Yeah, “doing it for the money” is a fast track to losing your mind. But it IS a trade/vocation, that takes time, skill, and investment.
BRB incorporating "Calvin's underwear gnome economics" into my rants about Calvin.
(When my wife is working too hard and needs a break, my usual prompt is "Don't give John Calvin the satisfaction!!")
"Are you making art to get rich? You would have failed and been miserable at any point in history."
Do you think??? That artists did not do??? Works for hire??????
Making art to be the best or to be rich or because you have to are the only reasons to make art. Wanting a normal job where you make art is incorrect I guess.
(Deep breath)
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
(Continued in subsequent skeets. Or perhaps this guy can tell ChatGPT to approximate a conclusion….)
MAN WHO OWES HIS SUCCESS TO DISCOVERING A FLUKE IN THE ALGORITHM AND USING IT TO SELL A COMPLETELY FORGETTABLE SERIES OF BOOKS IN THE WORLD'S TIREDEST GENRE: I did this because I needed it. There was a burning desperation in the depths of my soul
Wow, what utter glibness after he won the self-publishing lottery. Especially when any writer or reader could name dozens of unpublished or unrecognized pieces as being worthy of the same level attention (or more so) than his Silo series!
I try to explain to people that the mentality that makes people not get vaccines is not that they're too stupid to know how disease spreads but that they basically believe that having as many people die as possible is good because the chosen ones will survive (and obviously they are the chosen ones)
Oh, are you upset that I'm in your house taking stuff? If only you weren't such a materialist! If only you were maintaining a house for the joy of curating a space rather than hoarding items like some kind of philistine. While I was taking your stuff, you could simply pay yourself in not caring!
I really enjoyed the first book in the Wool series and I liked Silo. After reading his bad takes, I thought I should stop reading his work, but I borrow it from a library and he hates libraries, so I'll just continue doing that.
This is the mirror image of the colonialist attitude of the companies that make the "AI" software
The difference is that this is industrial scale theft
Yes, even w/out stealing others' work it would be a threat, but at least be respectful as you take away people's livelihoods
People who measure success based on income are exactly the problem with this world right now. When bean counters decide what art is and whether it has value, everyone loses. It's like assuming everyone will like the same song and genre of music because it's sold a lot of albums. I'm so so tired...
This dude is just so stupid. As a musician, I'm not at all scared of AI - it sounds like a computer & I don't like computer music. I've made a fine living for 37 years entirely from playing music, not trying to be the best, or get rich, or needing it like O2. I like playing music & I'm good at it.
AI has succeeded in making me realize that some people just have a soul and can be reached as a human being with empathy, and some just fucking don't and can't lol
The worst part of this, and there are many terrible parts of this, is that he entirely dismisses the idea of making art as anything other than a hobby.
On the plus side, now I won’t waste a minute of my life reading those books.
I suppose if I made my fortune plagiarizing Phillip K Dick I’d think everything is stolen and everyone was more talented than me, too.
When I complained to my parents about the way they complained about supporting my interest in the arts, they told me if I was a REAL artist, I'd do it even if it was difficult.
I was a child, so I believed them. They broke the joy of making enough that I stopped drawing & playing.
Funny how "earning a living wage doing something I love and/or am good at" is not on that list. I mean, that's one of a bunch of issues with the statement, but it seems like a glaring one given what else was said.
After reading Hugh’s VERY compassionate tweet, my urge to slit him open from his genitals to his neck, peel back his chest, reach in, grab his still-beating heart, rip it out & eat it, is nigh overwhelming.
But, for the moment, I’m managing to restrain the impulse.
Hope the Buddhism holds!😏👍🏻
