the NYPD, aided by cable news, is trying to further push the “outside agitator” narrative at Columbia
the evidence?
a bike lock and chain
“this is not what students bring to school. this is what professionals bring to campuses.”
Columbia literally sells these bike locks and chains to students
If literally every protest is caused by outside agitators, which seems to be the position, where on earth do they come from? Where is this "outside" that is producing all these agitators?
Nothing brings back the olden days like the phrase "outside agitators."
Most common complaint by George Wallace, Lester Maddox, Bull Connor, other seg stalwarts, against civil rights protesters in the1960s.
every biker in NYC fell off their chair laughing in disbelief when he pulled that out. that is a bog-standard pairing that at least half of us ride with daily.
(they're all good locks, Bront. nice selection by Columbia Public Safety.)
My only bust ever was for chaining my bike to a Battery Park City tree trunk w/ one of those locks (coated to not hurt bark). The cop screwed up the paperwork so bad it never happened officially.
Monday's 'Morning Joe' was a srartling reminder why I long ago stopped listening to MSNBC before noon. I won't make that a.m. mistake again. Must have to do with sponsors. Yech.
Look at the source people, you have to know you’re not going to get the truth about chain-based bike locks from cable news.
Cable propagandists have been wanting to bring down big chain for decades.
The 'bike lock and chain' argument came from the 1960's back when people said that punks would fight swinging safety chains with a bike lock on them as a flail during riots... it was an old thing involving improvised weapons using common everyday household objects to justify police brutality.
omg, that bike lock isn't just sold there, it's a bike lock engineered specifically to meet insurance risk requirements for the city of New York. It has "New York" in the name!
Reminds me of the cops here claiming homeless encampments were dangerous b/c they found knives. The knives? Decorative fancy knives that look cool but have almost no functionality. I had a friend who has a larger collection on their wall than what was found. Cops think we're all stupid.
This kind of narrative has become the norm, and it’s so destructive. From the press borg after the Afghan pullout, to this nonsense, straight up deceit presented as fact, with the media part and parcel of the whole thing. Lies racing around the world while the truth is still looking for its shoes.
'Look at this dangerous implement we found! We must stop them or this could get out of hand!'
Say the people rolling around in an armored fire truck with body armor.
MSNBC used to be my go to channel. Morning Joe became unwatchable in 2016 with their support of Trump. When they terminated Tiffany Cross, they crossed a line and I stopped watching altogether. The nail in the coffin was firing Mehdi Hasan.
Found some Jansport backpacks at the scene, containing Lyricist Lounge Vol. 2 and Arcade Fire CDs. Clearly this is the work of professional disruptors.
(my college cultural references may be a bit dated)
What difference would it make if they bought it off of Amazon? We're supposed to believe these chains are tightly regulated like precursor chemicals or something?
It's Morning Joe so I wasn't expecting journalistic integrity
But what person in their right mind, and with any self respect, who fashions themselves as merely just a commentator on current events would let a fucking cop of all people come on their show and leave their claims unchallenged? 💫
Just like 'piles of rocks scattered throughout the compound' that were simply rocks used to hammer tent stakes into the compacted ground. There is clearly an intent to misrepresent everything by the 'authorities'.
Also:
IT IS NOT ILLEGAL FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO ENGAGE WITH STUDENTS IN PROTEST NOR IS IT ILLEGAL TO BE A "Professional Protestor" NOR IS IT ILLEGAL TO "teach others" HOW TO PROTEST.
